Paint the Sky with Stars by Enya is a classic album. Every track is excellent and so relaxing to listen to, one song just flows into another and great to listen to when you want to unwind after a hard day’s work. She has a haunting voice that gives me a tickle on the back of my neck; I could listen to her for hours.
Let me take you through the album.
Track one: The famous ‘Orinoco Flow’ this is a chirpy song and the chorus line every so often ‘Sail Away Sail Away’ hits in with a beat of deep drums. What a great choice for the start of the album.
Track two: ‘Caribbean Blue’ with its soft strumming guitar start, and then she starts to sing. Her voice is something else. If you close your eyes you can imagine the tide ebbing in and out, I can almost feel the water lapping around my feet.
Track three: ‘Book of Days’ a piano plays all the way through this very catchy track and the background choristers really compliment Enya here.
Track four: ‘Anywhere Is’ another chirpy number on the choppy seas this time but she is only dreaming, an unusual number for Enya but very easy to listen to.
Track five: ‘Only if’ a simple song but you find yourself singing along to the chorus ‘If You Really Want To’ its really catchy.
Track six: ‘The Celts’ the musical entrance to this track is superb and then she comes in with that voice of hers, she seems to be humming more than singing lyrics a very moving piece.
Track seven: ‘China Roses’ my favourite, it has to be listened to with your eyes shut. A true classical piece and so relaxing. She has a perfect voice and singing this song it really stands out.
Track eight: ‘Shepherd Moons’ A really nice piano piece that lasts for three and a half minutes so relaxing.
Track nine: ‘Ebud ae’ an African dance and the drum beat in the background really makes this track special but it is quite short just lasting 1.53 minutes.
Track ten: ‘Storms in Africa’ carrying on the African theme it starts with a guitar playing then the choristers come in. You can really imagine the skies blackening with the rolling clouds coming down over the mountains. As the track goes on it gets more dramatic, the drums get louder, and the choristers fasten their beat until you actually imagine the heavens opening.
Track eleven: ‘Watermark’ the piano plays a haunting tune here, it sounds quite sad but boy it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I usually back track and play this over again, it just isn’t long enough for me.
Track twelve: ‘Paint the Sky with Stars’ What a superb one to follow that last track, again tingle on the neck. Her voice is so clear and she sings with such feeling.
Track thirteen: ‘Marble Halls’ a ballad sung again crystal clear and so haunting. It has a nice flow and she hits some high notes with such ease.
Track fourteen: ‘On My Way Home’ Church organ entry then a strong choral song with the odd church bell ringing makes this a lovely piece. The chorus is catchy you start to tap your feet a bit towards the end. Very refreshing.
Track fifteen: ‘The Memory of Trees’ nice serene start from the piano then it warms up to a crescendo when the voices hit in and flows along so beautifully. Listening to this I imagine myself in the middle of a forest with the wind blowing, the leaves on the trees are rustling like mad it is a magical track.
Track sixteen: ‘Boadicea’ brilliant end for the album, simple tune to put you in a state of complete relaxation. The background tune behind her humming sounds like the tune from that old classic film ‘The Fog’.
Now that it is finished I will start from track one again it is so addictive. If you appreciate a touch of class you have to play this work of art.
