After 4 years without a new album and a couple of mind-blowing DJ sets on the beach, Fatboy Slim returns with "Palookaville" in 2004. No need to introduce the man himself... Mr Norman Cook has a portfolio longer than Inspector Gadget's arms: former Housemartins and Dub International band member, House/Big Beat legend under various nicknames (Mighty Dub Katz, Fatboy Slim etc...) and famous remixer who helped Cornershop shoot to fame with "Brimful of Asha".
"Palookaville" isn't the expected Dance album a lot of fans awaited. It is certainly Fatboy Slim's most personal and autobiographical one to date. It's a very nice mixture of Rock, Pop and Electronic music.
The opening track "Don't let the man..." is probably the closest song you'll get to "vintage" Fatboy Slim. It is quite similar to "Praise you".
"Slash Dot Dash" is an energetic Punkish number with a guitar sample reminiscent of the Dead Kennedys combined with an unforgivable vocal sample.
"Wonderful night" features Hip Hop artist Lateef who delivers cheeky lyrics over a cool jazzy tune.
"Long way from home" was the music used for a well-known mobile phone advert (I let you find out which one as I don't want to advertise!). This version has added vocals and guitars by Punk Rock band Jonny Quality. It's actually my favourite song on "Palookaville", I find it quite elevating!
"Put it back together" was cowritten with and sang by Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz). Legend has it it was written during a drunken night. It's a song about putting a broken couple back together. It is quite a touching little ballad, it reminds me of Blur "Tender".
"Mi Bebe Masoquista" brings the tempo back up with electronic sounds and distorted samples. It's uplifting and hypnotic.
"Push and shove" was written with Justin Robertson (Lionrock) who also provides the vocals. It's a downtempo love song with some uplifting parts. I wasn't too keen at first but it certainly grows on you!
"North West Three" is a nice lounge track . It combines electronic beats and cool jazzy samples.
"The journey" features another guest appearance from Lateef. It's a mellow Hip Hop song that gently flows.
"Jin Go Lo Ba" is the big House track most fans were hoping for! It uses a sample from the famous "Jingolaba" by Olatunji. Think Samba, Brazil and Fatboy Slim's trademark club sound!
"Song for Chesh" is a slow "Big Beat" tune loaded with samples in the crafty way only Mr Norman Cook can! Perfect background for afterparties!
"The Joker" is a clever cover version of the Steve Miller Band song. It features vocals from Bootsy Collins. A great sing-along track that will make everyone smile (especially when you realize some of the lyrics have been altered!).
All in all, "Palookaville" IS like a box of chocolates ... It's full of different flavours and everyone is bound to hear something they like in this album. A great present for somebody with eclectic tastes who doesn't mind a little bit of House music here and there.
Advantages: just fantastic thumping dance tunes! Disadvantages: may cause embarrasing dancing!
where to start?..............i dont really know what exactly to say about this?! I really like it..........
I have always loved Fatboyslims music, but have never bought any of his CDs? Why? and why have i bought this one? The answers to all of those questions is...I dont know!!! I have no idea what possesed me to buy this album, i suppose it was an impulse buy...but i havent regreted it. Although this isnt Fatboyslims best material it is stiill ... ...is very unique and i dont think can be heard with any other artist.
Within this album there are some very very very odd songs with some even more odd lyrics, but even their oddness has not put me off!!! The first track in my opinion is a fabulous start to the album, it is called "Dont let the man get you down" and starts with an almost comical intro of lots of "ooooooooooooooooooooooooo"ing with just a piano to acompany. After about 30s of this ...

Advantages: Its nice to see Fatboy slim going back to his roots again Disadvantages: Like any album some of the tracks just seem like space fillers
Fatboy Slim was great in the late 90's with his dance tracks and samples and silly loops, but that was then. Even the House music age is over, and Norman Cook has recognized this and has put together a great new collection of just plain music. The rhymes and singing of Lateef, Damon Albarn and Fatboy-alum Bootsy Collins fit right in with the hip-hop, laid-back feel of this album. My favorites include: "Don't Let The Man Get You Down" (featuring a ... ...on Vocals), "Mi Bebe Masoquista" (Great beat), "North West Three" (good song to just chill to, much like the entire album), and "The Journey" (again with Lateef). This album is great for Fatboy Slim fans looking for something different and who are ready to progress with the times. If you're looking for more "Rockafeller Skank" then you won't find much of that here. Buy this album expecting a unique, relaxing, yet fun experience. My personal favourite ...

Advantages: Funky bass, strong, catchy beats Disadvantages: Let down by a couple of mediocre songs
This is a real feelgood album, Highlights for me include 'The Joker', 'Wonderful Night' and 'The Journey'. The album is different to the usual Fatboy Slim flavour, but it offers a good mix of guest artists and experimental sounds, such as in the somewhat bizarre, but funky 'Slash Dot Slash'. Altogether i would recommend this album, depite some songs such as 'Put It Back Together' letting down the general high standard. This is not to say that it's ...

Additional notes
Album Notes: 'Palookaville' distances itself from the ambient chillout sound of Norman Cook's 2000 release, 'Somewhere Between..' and returns to the trip hop, rock influenced sound of his breakthrough album 'You've Come A Long Way Baby'. Featuring real instruments where previously samples were used, the album includes collaborations with artists such as Bootsy Collins and Lateef. Though based in trip hop the album also takes influence from rap, country and punk and even includes a Steve Miller cover.
