To completely over-generalize things, American teenagers haveway too much brat-quotient, ... more
and too little originality. The firstmay not be a hindrance if youre in a band, but the second wonthelp to get you noticed in the big wide world of showbiz ?even ifit does sum up too much in music these days. Add to that abackground of coming from one of the most debauched American citiesof all (Las Vegas) and you hardly have a recipe for cutting edge orinventive musical prowess. But these 4 post-high-schoolers havebucked their environment and youth factor in coming up with adynamic debut. They grew up playing Blink 182covers, andthats easily audible in their own style, but theres enoughindividuality to cut it through the wad of alternative boy bands. You have to give them credit for naming the tracks as they havetoo. Who cares if the titles are nearly as long as the songs, itsall in their policy of thinking twice and not accepting the norm. Not a prevalent factor in the US music scene. The initial tuning in?sounds lead into their well-driven,overclocked, yet controlled power pop. But thats their dime adozen attention grabber, rather than where their promise lies. There are enough changes on track three to make it moreinteresting, which somehow goes from standard guitar strut to drum& bass. Fairly seamlessly too. Then theres the Euro-trancedance intro on Intermission?which then heads into a pianoconcerto. (No, you read correctly.) Maybe its a gimmick that wearsoff fairly soon, but you have to admire their out-of-the-boxthinking trend again. Youll be pleasantly surprised by the circus carousel sounds ofBut Its Better If You Do? Unlikely, but once more, it works. Deepcellos are equally implausible in a post- SergeantPepperworld, but they slip in a few of those between thepower chords of I Write Sins Not Tragedies? To mix SKA with Latinand forge it into jaunty pop is quite an achievement, but thatswhat I Constantly Thank God For Esteban?achieves. That leads intoa weird honky-tonk piano with Mexican horns and European accordioninterludes. The level of musical invention grows well through thedozen or so tracks, so that by the most impressive final BuildGod, Then Well Talk?(again, with top-notch string section) youreleft bemused by what has gone before. It could all be a horriblemish-mash, but instead its an intriguing mix. Lyrically there is nothing too weighty, but issues are raisedand images painted. Hospice care and death is covered, along withembarrassing trips to strip joints and rampant testosterone. Thereare a few lame lines to ignore, but also just enough stimuli tomake it all interesting. Theyre not in the master wordsmithcategory yet, but how many current heavyweights were at 18+anyway? Although recorded on the East Coast USA, remember that this is aband from the dessert, not ex caf?bar culture. They are not Green Day, Good Charlotte, or Simple Plan?yet nor do they try to emulate thosepeers either. The blinkers of cut and paste hit-making has beeneschewed in favour of showing themselves off as offbeat anddifferent, but with enough home truth punkiness to appeal to fansof all the above. They are a boy band still, and their style of song and deliveryis profoundly American, and rather too shouty for their own good. But confidence to downplay your abilities with subtlety rarelyshows on a debut, and so their melting pot of talent is unlikely tobubble until a later album. The Killershave beenthe best musical export from Nevada of late, but sharp-wittedinspiration from these lads, at an age when they have barely ridthemselves of bum-fluff is surprising, unexpected and mostwelcome. Original and accessible, their music perhaps rates better with those who are avid fans of bands such as "Fall Out Boy"** or perhaps even "Blink 182" due to their similar styles; upbeat with though provoking lyrics, rather than the contraversially more serious bands we can see today.
However this might seem like a gross misunderstanding...which it is. To me P!ATD are as relevant to those of a more pop background as they are acclaimed by rock artists. The catchy background, tongue catching lyrics and general professionalism can be admired from all over the spectrum.
As a band I guess they can be described as slightly eccentric; which is a refreshing break in what seems like a middle music ground. Examples of this behaviour can be seen in their music videos where they like to play dress up; often donning circus type outfits. I am also led to believe that their concerts also follow similar suit, which are always sold out now, by the way.
Including smash hit singles like "I write sins not tragedies" and "Lying is the most fun a girl can have without taking off her clothes", P!ATD's "A fever you can't sweat out" is to me THE best album out right now. Undeniably their fame has been echoed throughout the world, putting them number one on my music list of 2006!
* Where can I get a copy? *
I picked up my copy of "A fever you can't sweat out" at my local "Music Zone". I paid Ģ8.97 which I think was reasonable; granting post xmas sales etc. I was sceptical about the band at first; one of my closest friends who shares a similar taste in music had already declared it as a "faze". He too though has a copy of the album; something I dare to say he doesn't seem to have grown out just yet!
What I did like about the band though, was their slight obscurity. I'd heard a couple of bits of tracks here and there but nothing too much - possibly because I steer well away from radios due to them over playing any good song! And I guess what hooked me was their odd track names - I'm always willing to give something a try!
The cover is intricate in itself; it sports a red background with five figures sitting at a table. It reminds me somewhat of the desperate housewives titles where they pick out housewives across the years - instead here they pick other celebrities.
The inlay too is as decorative; and well worth a flick through. The CD itself is yellow with what I think are red roses falling down it. It's bright enough to get itself noticed, which is a miracle in itself as CD's have a tendancy of going walkies in my car!

The 13 tracked CD itself is fantastically designed. The first half of the album uses more techy instruments; very clever drum work and fast fingered key boards whereas the second half uses much more old fashioned instruments like an accordion! It is joined simplistically with an interlude track boasting sound music knowledge as they successfully blend the different styles of the instruments used.
It is important here to note that the bands only lyricist is guitarist and back up singer, Ryan Ross. All 13 tracks on the album are products of his ingenuity; drawing material from his own personal experience as well as his imagination. It would be hard for someone to deny his creativity and talent for complex lyric structures, even if they weren't fans of the actual music itself.
I think in a music culture of today it is important to have a band on the scene that can claim making their own music. With P!ATD you won't find any manufactured crap. This too is echoed in the fact they are signed up to an independent record label rather than a global one like Sony or Universal.
My favourite songs on the album are definitely hit single "I write sins not tragedies" - I love the brute honesty that comes out of it. The lyrics "Techincally our marriage is saved, so pour the champagne" strikes home particularly well as so often it is that people find themselves turning to drunk to cure their problems.
Other songs that are permenantly on repeat are "But it's better if you do" and "London Beckoned Songs About Money Written by Machines" where lyrics "Just for the record, the weather today is slightly sarcastic with a good chance of: A. Indifference or B. Disinterest in what the critics say" are nothing short of fantastic.
Another point to make about the band is to draw attention to their extensive pop culture knowledge. Most of the album, inspiration and direct quoting, comes from intense interest in other 20th century greats. Indeed it is for the reason that I believe their cover was concepted; using well known material to express themselves. This doesn't mean that they are lacking in their own thoughts, but they do pay a huge amount of respect to their idols.
My only problem with the album is that it is only around 40 minutes long. I generally tend to like my albums a bit longer as when I stick them in the car, I like them to take me through the journey. However, saying that, I'd rather a shorter, better album than a longer one which skimps on talent.

When he's not singing about himself, Urie busies his time by taking part in the pantomime style farce that is current single 'I Write Sins, Not Tragedies', and with an accompanying ...

...things have been said about Panic! At The Disco, whether it be that they are a fall out boy rehash, that they are far too stuck up, or that they are trying to by techno, when they are emo, but i think, that shining thorugh all of this, is an ignorance of the utter variation that is in this album, and the fact that they are, crucially, much better than fall out boy. However, there is no getting away from the fact, that since the internet release of ... ...clear, that anyone who tradmarks Panic! as emo, has not been listening clearly enough to the music.
The first half of the album, is a romp of hard rock and techno, with the voice of lead singer Brendan Ross at the height of its yell. the unbelieable singing with such an open throat of Ross on this album, is definitely my favourtie thing about it. but that is not enough to create a brilliant album, which is where the conept of the album comes in.

...this album and think that Panic! At The Disco are a good band. In my opinion, they have a more unique sound, if not so heavy sound, compared to Fall Out Boy. They've put the dancing part back into rock, and given my neck a bit of a break from head-banging.
The band are from Las Vegas, Nevada.
Now, onto the CD. I bought this CD after downloading two songs from, I think it was, purevolume.com or maybe their MySpace page. A Fever You Can't Sweat Out: ... ...seems to be about how Panic! started out. It has a nice beat and good lyrics.

Advantages: not JUST emo.. a generally kool sounding album, witch catchy songs Disadvantages: some songs are a bit too dancey for the typical rock fan
Panic! At The Disco are THE new band to check out. Their music sounds so fresh and new. They have such a unique sound, so much that the only band I can honestly compare them to (vaguely) is Fall Out Boy, and still... Panic! At The Disco are much better, and more original.
Also, if you like Chuck Palahniuk (author of Fight Club among other great books) his lwords are abundant throughout the lyrics in the album with "im the new cancer" from Fight ... ...but I am not an 'emo' and I still love the album, as the songs are so catchy and original - although, agreed, emo fans will like it also: which is evident of its mass appeal.
Songs like "But It's Better If You Do", "Lying Is The Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off" and "I Write Sins, Not Tragedies" are arguably the best on the album, but rest assured... every single song on this album is absolutely awesome. Each song have wonderfully ...

Panic! at the disco debut with "A fever you can't sweat out" and for a first album this band has something you don't get a lot now a days...a new sound. Finally the era of the "the" bands seems to be on the way out. Panic are making a real impact on todays music scene, well on the way to a sell out UK tour and with this top quality album under their belts Panic are going to be around for a while. They manage to sound individual and fresh enough to ... ...I would recommend the Panic! album to anyone that likes old school stuff from Blink 182, maybe a bit of The Kooks, Reel Big Fish. Its nothing like albums by the above bands but if you like the three of them I think Panic! will be up your street.
Its the kind of album you can listen with all emotions, its not confined to "feel good" or "sad songs" its totally open to interpretation.
I love it and although its not everyones cup of tea the debut album ...

Advantages: Great songs from a great band! Disadvantages: The song titles are too long to remember!!! Too many intermissions!
I love this album, I got into PATD when I heard one song made by them, Lying is the Most Fun a girl can have without taking her clothes off...yes a very long title!!
The album has a mix of song types and if you like Fall out Boy, you'll love these!! Panic at the Disco are classed as "Indie Rock and Punk" but I class them as "alternative" cause there really is a mix of everything laced with rock.
I recommend the album to anyone who has heard of panic at the disco and think they're interesting!!
There are a couple of downsides to the album, there are alot of "intermissions" which take the place of 3-4 minute long songs, but other than that I love it!! :-D The album made me love Panic at the Disco and I think you will love them too after listening to this album!!! :-D ...
Advantages: Original, Unique, Catchy. Disadvantages: Maybe too different for some.

2. The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide is Press Coverage
A bit of a brave, politically challenging title but it gives it's name to a great song. One of my favourites from the album from the first listen, this song was released in USA but not in the UK I don't think. It is a very catchy song that you may well find yourself singing days after hearing it, though I think I could say that about almost any Panic! At The Disco song. Great song in my opinion.
5. Camisado
Containing a bit more keyboard, in the introduction at least. This is a good song which has a good beat under an Indie styled rest of song. 'If youcan't take the kid from the fight, take the fight from the kid' Clever lyrics in the rest of the song again make you think. The song has ...
Advantages: Very original Disadvantages: Not for everybody, quite obscure in places
I was first a bit sceptical about the band. Having watched the video for "I write sins not tragedies" and classing it as rubbish. But then my friend downloaded the song and after hearing it a few times, I loved it. I downloaded a couple more songs off the internet and immediately loved them both. A couple of weeks later I brought the album. As it's their debut album I got it quite cheap for a fairly new album, Ģ9.99.
It didn't come out of my CD player for about 4 months, I listened to it constantly. The songs have amazing, well thought out lyrics with stories behind them. And all the songs are original.
I would strongly recommend buying this album if you haven't already. Although it may take a couple of listens through to get/love it. ...
