You may have heard the single currently in the charts ' Last request.' This is the song that alerted me to Paolo Nutini.
Once in a while you hear something truly wonderful, that really makes you stop and listen. Paolo Nutini's debut album is that something, a rare album where you dont find yourself skipping tracks. Desperate to hear more from this amazing new talent, I really think that the he will prove himself to be something great.
Paolo Nutini is an 18 year old singer/songwriter from Paisley, tipped as one of Scotland's hottest talents, the album These Streets is a gem.
Paolo has an Italian father, hense the name and the looks and a Glaswegian Mum, which explains the accent you can pick up in his songs. His influences are David Bowie, Damien Rice, Oasis, Beatles, U2, Pink Floyd and Fleetwood Mac, which should give you an idea of what a treat your in for.
I downloaded the album These Streets and choose the £10.99 version, getting me an additional 4 tracks, 3 of which are live.
1. Jenny Don't Be Hasty. 2. Last Request 3. Rewind 4. Million Faces 5. These Streets 6. New Shoes 7. White Lies 8. Loving You 9. Autumn 10. Alloway Grove 11. Million Faces Live At the Beford 12. Jenny don't be hasty Live at Parr Street 13. Rewind Live Version 14. Sugar Man Single Version
Starting with Jenny Don't be Hasty, a more upbeat track kicking off the album, already the smooth yet edgy voice grabs your attention and has you ready for more, not my favourite track on the album but good and catchy none the less with good use of guitar riffs.
Moving on to the more familiar Last request, this track makes my hairs stand on end. Paolo's velvety voice and the songs delicious melody is chilled out and relaxing, but full of passion and so charming to hear his accent creeping out. This track is set to be a classic.
Rewind and Million Faces follow the same vein, with Million Faces showing off his vocal range brilliantly along with his talent for beautiful lyrics matched with gorgeous melody.
These Streets has a more folky feel, while new shoes is more upbeat and fun. White Lies is a delicate tapestry of guitar motif weaved with his gentle sexy voice and delicate piano, taking you to Loving You, again more upbeat and slightly bluesy, certainly Paolo seems older than his years.
Autumn has a more haunted feel set along careful clever lyrics, I believe this is a tribute to his grandparents. The military style beat to Alloway Groove certainly stands out, this track has a celtic feel to it, and is a great track both lyrically and melodically, which is a good thing as it is 14 minutes and 12 seconds long. You can definitely pick up Beetles influences in this one, after the military start the track morphs into a slow haunted section with a more folky almost Joni Mitchell style, gorgeous voice just melts you though. After enduring a minute or so of silence you are greeted with a further version of Last request, just piano and Paolo, amazing.
The live tracks are all wonderful, showing off his voice and his natural musical ability. This guy is obviously very comfortable performing.
Listening to this album, you cant escape the fact that Paolo is indeed very talented. His natural abilities shine through, he has a clear sense of melody, and his understanding of the power of dynamics is clear especially in the live tracks.
I cant recommend this enough, truly magnificent.
