As you can see from the title of this exorcism of the myth that surrounds the band that call themselves Coldplay, I really do not understand WHAT THE FUSS IS ABOUT!!! Coldplay are most certainly NOT the saviours of rock music - they are quiet indie-lite tunesmiths who, occasionally, can produce something quite good but generally blend into the category marked 'indie-pop' which can hastily be disposed of, and indeed this album is greatly disposable.
I don't mean to be nasty (read my reviews of Toploader and Placebo and you will see that I am a fair, kind, generous person) but this is not groundbreaking stuff. This is middle-of-the-road stuff that somehow has gained great critical appraisal from the music media, who obviously have no idea what they are talking about, or listened to this album with muffled earphones with a poor sound system. Because Coldplay are young, and so greatly hyped-up, this is considered a masterpiece. If Chris Rea, Eric Clapton or some other old man released this the response wouldn't be so ecstatic I assure you.
Just like Travis (an equally boring yet strangely over-rated band), Coldplay are decent tunesmiths yet cannot hold the attention for long before I move on to something more interesting. The likes of 'Yellow', when looked at on its own, is nice enough, but to have the same boring urge to be loved repeated song after song after song (see 'Shiver', 'Trouble', every other song on the album)? Please, the buyers deserve more than this!!
I cannot say this is a bad album because there are people out there who will like it and for that I applaud you. But seeing as this is a forum on which I can express my opinion, then my opinion I shall give. This is the most over-rated album of all time, not taking anything by U2 into account. I don't subscribe to the whole 'Coldplay = Genius' theory touted in the press, not be a long shot. This album, ultimately, is very, very boring. There. Said it. And now you'll all go out and buy it like the little scamps that you are.
emotion-fortified "Shiver", Coldplay proved they could shift between elated and crushed in a breath as singer Chris Martin poured out music's oldest chestnut (uncondit...
