This album was a bored lunchtime purchase, I’d heard a couple of tracks on the radio over a period of months, heard a bit about the band, but knew (and still know) little about them. Well since that lunchtime me and the lads from Coldplay have become pretty well acquainted on the old HiFi and in the car.
Every track is original, which is refreshing in these days of tired cover versions. More so, every track has a solid lyric, if you had to label, which I hate doing, I’d say there’s a theme of angst ridden love songs, but don’t let that put you off.
I simply love the distorted guitar sound, it suits the mood of the album perfectly, not over-produced, just how I’d like to think it would come across in a right smokey club.
I also really like the understated vocals, not the most tuneful, but every note and word is delivered with a gritty feeling which I hardly dare to call soul, as that description will be mis-interpreted. I don’t mean crap, manufactured bilge with no feeling for words or music, just a bad attempt at emulating musical heroes – No the soul in these songs, like the perfectly moody ‘Sparks’, comes from a knowledge of the lyrics, coupled with a unity with the rest of the band and the song-writers.
There is no favourite track for me, and I’m not about to write an essay on each one, just buy, borrow or steal a copy – take it home, pour your favourite drink, TV off, Phone off and enjoy, you deserve it. I promise you parachutes will stay in your machine or close buy for some time, a future classic for sure.
Someone described this album as typical student music, well that makes me one of the oldest students around, do I care – the hell I do – more power to their elbow – keep music alive by buying original stuff like this, I can’t wait for their next offering, surely it can get better. I’d love to hear them really let rip at a couple of numbers, but that’s as far as I can go with the criticism, other than – would it really hurt to put a bit of information about the band in the printed inserts.

A mate of mine saw them in Leeds about a year ago - apparently they went down like a lead balloon and were practically booed off stage. Funny how things work out eh? Nice op, Ben:o)

Advantages: Accoustic harmonies and easy to listen to songs.Sincere and heartfelt lyrics. A really nice album. Disadvantages: I didnt like it as much as X&Y or A Sudden Rush of Blood to the Head.
