Coldplay are: Chris Martin - Vocals, Guitars, Piano and Keyboards, Chris (23) Born in Devon. Has a 1st Degree in Ancient world studies. Started playing guitar at 15 Will Champion – Drums, Will (21) Born in Southampton. Has a 2.1 Degree in Anthropology. Coldplay got together at the university college of London, they came to realise they all shared a passion for music. They started jamming in the corridors of Ramsley Hall and it wasn’t long before they realised that they could make really good music.
In May 1998 they released the self-financed 'Safety' EP. This was originally intended as a demo for record companies. The title comes from the artwork for the EP sleeve.
Jon Hilton, a friend of the band, took the photograph, the photo shows Chris' head framed beneath the 'Safety Door' sign. The band got their name from a disused one of their friends, which they liked.
They had the EP recorded and all they had to do now was raise the money for the 500 copies, they were mostly given to record companies who weren’t impressed and friends and family, they ended up with only 50 on sale. The EP finally reached the hands of BMG Publishing and Parlophone, the latter of whom Coldplay has been signed to since the summer of 1999.
After this, the band took to doing gigs hoping to find themselves a record deal. On the 7th of December 1998 they played the Camden Falcon, London to a crowd of about 150 people. This was an important gig, as Simon Williams (co-founder of Fierce Panda records and ex-journalist) was there and was indeed stunned. The band was then featured in the New Year's edition of NME, hotly tipped for 1999 despite still being unsigned.
Then came their next release in April 1999 on the Fierce Panda label, the single 'Brothers And Sisters' was again limited in number of copies (2500). The single soon single went to number 92 in the charts
Over the summer of 1999, Coldplay played a London show with Catatonia and made a record deal with Parlophone they also played on the new bands stage at Glastonbury. After finishing recording, Coldplay were able to tour Britain with Bellatrix, as co-headliners. Parlophone wanted them to release more material, the result being the 'Blue Room' EP, released in October 1999 with 5000 copies. 'Bigger, Stronger' featured once more on the EP, giving Coldplay good press and more airplay on Radio 1.
Parlophone were anxious to release 'Shiver' as a single. The b-side 'For You' was made in just one evening. The other b-side was an acoustic version of 'Careful Where You Stand.' This time, Coldplay were called to the attentions of many more people, following much airplay on MTV and on various radio stations. Released on the 6th March 2000, 'Shiver' hit the Official UK Charts at no. 35.
Then came the release of 'Yellow' on the 26th of June. The airplay had this time greatly increased, and it was played all the time by MTV. The following Sunday 'Yellow' landed at no. 4 in the Official UK Charts, and Top Of The Pops were keen to have them on their Friday night show.
In the week before its release, 'Parachutes' received rave reviews from everyone, with NME, Melody Maker, Radio 1 and XFM among others, praising it as the best album of the year.
With 'Parachutes' release on the 10th July 2000, Coldplay played a gig in HMV, London. This was very popular, and the store was rammed with people, many were watching it over the net, and loads listening, courtesy of XFM. It was predicted that most of the people who went to the gig bought the album, and 'Parachutes' zoomed up to number 1 in the Official UK Album Charts.
Cold play are probably one of the best bands I have ever heard, their music suits my every mood and brings me great relief from being bored at work (I’m actually listening to parachutes whilst typing this) This album brings me so many happy memories from last year, and I am still not bored of listening to it (after about 1000 plays) If you have not already heard Coldplay, which I very much doubt, then you must run to the shops now and buy this album pronto !!!

nightchild, thanks so much for your kind comment on my Moulin Rouge op. Whilst you shouldn't take much notice of someone with as few reads as I have, I would say that while this is very informative on the band's history, it maybe doesn't tell the reader much about the album itself: its style, its genre, influences and so on. If you're looking for people who know how to write, I recommend flashpointz and EnglishPatient - both excellent writers in my humble op... oh, and SB too.

Advantages: Some lovely songs, very mellow and emotional. With mostly great lyrics, and brilliant music throughout, this really is one of the must-own albums of the new century. Disadvantages: A few rather duff lyrics, and it won't be appreciated if you are too cynical about the hype that surrounds the band. Don't be, or you'll miss out
