Being a fan of Coldplay (mainly thanks to "Green Eyes") I just had to snap this bargain up when I saw it for £2.98 in the Amazon.co.uk January 2009 sale.
The album is fairly short with only 10 songs but below I will rate each song individually and rate it out of 10.
Don't Panic: This is a great start to the album and the lyrics are little strange to begin with but then they go on to be nostalgic and talk about living in a beautiful world etc. Chris Martin's voice is fantastic and it's really shown straight away with this song. 8/10
Shiver: I adore this song, the guitaring is absolutely amazing and it makes the hairs on my neck stand on end, its just such an amazing song and even better when listened to as loud as possible. The song is very emotional and filled with passion, singing about always being by your side and waiting in line just to see if you care. This song features on Guitaro Hero too which is partly why I adore it so much as I just love the music and playing the guitar piece myself on the XBox 360. 9/10
Spies: This has a slightly
haunting beginning and then the guitar starts very slowly and quietly at first. Chris' voice breaks in and the lyrics are literally singing about spies coming out of the water. I love the guitar in the background on this song and Chris hits some pretty high notes which just shows you his future potential! 8/10
Sparks: This song is quite soppy and slow to begin with. I adore this song so much. It's such a soulful song and one I love to sing along with. You can really be carried away with the song. The lyrics question whether someone has been driven away and promises of always looking out for that person. It's an emotional song and Chris' voice is perfectly complimented by the music, especially the guitar. I could listen to this song over and over again and often do when I play this album. 8/10
Yellow: This song is fairly well known now and the video is fantastic. One I remember watching so many times when we first had Sky in our house (perhaps thats the reason why I'm such a fan!) the lyrics don't make the most sense but they're great to sing and a lot of people will already know the words of this song! Its talking about the stars shining for someone, and writing a song for that person. Then it gets a little strange referring to skin and bones turning in to something beautiful but I think the lyrics are great and love to croon along with this song as well as tapping my feet to the terribly catchy rhythm of the song. 9/10
Trouble: This song has a very slow and soothing piano start, then the drums appear and followed on by Chris' voice this song is perfect. It's singing about making trouble and regretting things that have been said and done. This was released as a single and did pretty well if I recall correctly. 7/10
Parachutes: This song is actually only 46 seconds long and isn't really anything spectacular. It's just singing about loving somebody and being in love, it's got nice lyrics though and is a nice interlude in the album. It ends a little upbruptly for my liking but is followed by well by the next song. 6/10
High Speed: This song kicks straight in immediately after Parachutes and is a nice relaxing vibe. After a couple of minutes of listening to this song it gets a little repetitive but Chris sings beautifully and that definitely saves the song from the scrapheap! 6/10
We Never Change: This song continues with the relaxing feel of the end of the album and Chris is singing about how he wants to live life and I feel like this song was wrote for somebody in particular (maybe Gwyneth Paltrow? Not sure if they were together then!) it's very easy to listen to and once again Chris shows off his vocal skills to excellent heights. 7/10
Everything's Not Lost: This is a great ending to the album, fantastic lyrics, fantastic music, Chris sounds fantastic! This talks about counting up your demons and everything not being lost if you can just drive the bad things from your mind. This song is by far the longest on the album at 7 minutes 15 seconds, I don't feel bored of this song but anymore and I might possibly change my mind! 7/10
This album was released in 2000 and several of the songs have been released including Yellow, Shiver and Trouble.
The album length is just over 40 minutes which is a shame as some more songs always help you get value for your money but it's also not long enough that you'd get bored and most people could listen to this in the time it takes to get to work and back!
The booklet that comes with the album doesn't not contain any lyrics which is a little disappointing but it does have a few photographs and a little part at the end telling you about who worked on the album etc.
