If only the film had been worthy of this soundtrack - Under The Cherry Moon the film was quite weak but this album stand as one of his best.
Album opener sets the tone and is quite different to his previous album - the hippyish Around the World in a Day - the sound is quite tinny but as Prince produces and arranges as usual you know that it is intentional. The only way to describe it is the singles off the album - Kiss, Another...Mountains, Girls & Boys - almost everyone knows these and these are what the album sounds like - if that makes sense.
It is hard to describe the musical style of this album as in those days Prince was always difficult to pigeon-hole. It is light years away from anything he had previously done and paved the way for the experimentalism of Sign O The Times which came next.
There are a few weak songs on the album as usual with Prince but Prince at his weakest back then was still strong than most - Venus De Milo is an instrumental that is a bit of filler before the 2nd half starts and I Wonder U and Do U Lie? are weak timewasters also, musical afterthoughts. Well worth seeking out is a bootleg copy of the fan club only release of this album called Charade - this had different versions of the songs as well as unreleased tracks some of which could have replaced the weaker ones here and made it a much better album. If you cannot find the album look for the following songs: Theres Others Here With Us ( scariest song he ever recorded ) and Old Friends 4 Sale ( this is available on some official releases but it is a weaker song and too polised - this version is very bluesy and soulful )
If you don't own any Prince albums yet this isn't a bad place to start.
