composer, matching his prodigious talent as a performer. The result is an entertaining mix. The hilarious "Audience is Listening" complements more reflective pieces such as "For the Love of God." The high-powered "Animal" and "Greasy Kid's Stuff" are balanced by "Blue Powder" and "Alien Water Kiss." Unlike most guitar-god solo recordings, Passion & Warfare avoids the sort of technical noodling that is uninteresting to everyone except other guitarists, opting instead for a collection of high-quality music that is full of compositional experimentation without ever getting out of control. --Genevieve Williams
Advantages: Some fantastic playing and great rock tunes Disadvantages: Some songs lack direction and musicality

When it breaks to a new section about 2mins in it’s a dual guitar melody that sounds quiet effective, ...

I bought Passion & Warfare 10 years ago, on the strength of Vai's guitar work on Dave Lee Roth's 'Eat 'em and Smile' and 'Skyscraper'; just as I was getting into playing guitar, and instrumental stuff of this nature.
I was blown away. While on first listening, some of the stuff is hard work (Love Secrets, The Riddle) others tracks jumped out straight away.
Liberty - if a new country is looking for a new national anthem this should ... ...'play as fast as possible'...ha!)
For the Love of God - perfect development of a beautiful theme.
I Would Love To - The ultimate upbeat guitar tune. If this had lyrics, it would grace any Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Van Halen album as one of the strongest tracks. The fact that it has a crafted solo instead makes is all the better.
Overall, the album leaves you in awe of Vai's playing, and not just the light speed licks and strange noises he can coax ...
