Style Council had been written off as a has-been. However, his self-titled solo debut stifled the critics and once again highlighted his importance--and relevance--to the contemporary music scene, especially as this album partly inspired the emerging Britpop sound. Weller's life-long musical influences are overtly obvious, as the album ranges from the psychedelic ("Into Tomorrow", "Clues" and "Bull-Rush") to the blue-eyed soul influences of his Style Council days ("Amongst Butterflies"). The album's material revels in its own simplicity, free from the prosthetic sounds of synthesisers and drum machines, but at the same time highlights Weller's extraordinary musical and songwriting talents. --John Galilee

It's hard to bring any fanfare to a Paul Weller release these days, but Illumination ... more
speaks for itself, bringing together the past and future Weller like none of his solo work before. Producing the album himself (and playing most of the instruments), he's made Illumination sound like a celebration rather than an introspective vanity project. Songs such as the skyscraping "Leafy Trees" and "Standing Out in the Universe" are hard to imagine coming from his pen. Where the album fails is in the host of celebrity "friends" he's roped in on most of the tracks, which serve to dilute rather than enhance the songs; turning the album into a Jools Holland-esque novelty record rather than a collaboration. It works with garage and hip-hop, it fails with rock. Noel Gallagher, Kelly Jones, guitarist Aziz Ibrahim--the personalities are too big for the songs and their presence too overwhelming (particularly Jones, a man who used to write good records himself, who wrote the lyrics to and actually sings the pedestrian "Call Me No. 5"). The remarkable "It's Written in the Stars" is a revelation, however, sounding like it was actually written after a few glasses of good wine under the Mediterranean stars--and most of the rest of the album follows its lead. "Who brings joy?" he sings on the song of the same name, and for once, Weller is the answer to his own question. --Ben Johncock

"Woking" through his ascent to fame with "The Jam" the halcyon years of "The Style Council" and for all of his critically acclaimed solo career. Hewitt has even been the inspiration for some of Weller's songs - and he has extraordinary in-depth knowledge of the inspiration behind the rest. Once when Hewitt interviewed Weller for a music magazine he complained - 'I don't know why people ask me all these questions. All the answers are in my songs.' Largely unnoticed Weller has used thirty-years of lyrics to explore his personal history and beliefs. Taking as his starting point these lyrics alongside a lifetime's friendship Paolo Hewitt shows us the real Paul Weller the man inside the music.

pilgrimages to Nick Drake's grave, but nothing could have prepared us for quite such a return to form. The mood was autobiographical, most notably on "Has My Fire Really Gone Out" and the title track--both of which dealt with the writer's block that plagued Weller after The Style Council. And yet, Wild Wood is anything but morose: flutes and sundazed guitars adorn more pastoral moments; "Shadow Of The Sun" takes stock of youthful idealism and finds redemption in the wisdom of years; and "Sunflower" remains a superlative burst of psychedelic powerpop. But more than actual songs, it's the instrumental passages and interconnecting refrains that truly reveal their author's attention to detail--and give Wild Wood an edge over the rest of his solo material. --Peter Paphides

Advantages: A remarkable, perfectly produced live album Disadvantages: It is a live album, and this is enough to put many buyers off!
fathers and mothers jumped and hopped around in drain pipes and minis, their children now stand, silent in front of the same man but in reflective thought of his words, rather than his music.
After the surprising success of the start of his solo career, (and let's face it, we didn't think he would ever appear again after the break of The Style Council) he bought us strong albums with guitar in hand. In the shape of 'PaulWeller,' 'Wild Wood,' but it was only with the giant storm of a live album, simply titled, 'Live Wood,' in September 1994 that he had stumbled across something that other bands find incredibly hard to do, and that's release a pleasing live LP.
Jumping back into the studio for a brief while, he didn't dip his toes into the waters of live audience participation again until, 'Days Of Speed,' in 2001. Complete with all ...

PaulWeller
I've always had mixed feelings about PaulWeller. I love all the old classics, and listen to them a lot. But this is the first time I've been through a new album of his that has stopped me in my tracks and made me sit down and listen. There are his vocals, a light touch, but often with a hard edge, difficult to carry out, PaulWeller does it so well.
The album starts with classic PaulWeller, tight sounds and driving chords, as in "Light nights" and the title track "22 Dreams". There is a lightness of touch In "All I wanna do" and "Invisible", at his best as writer and singer. Then a real left field move with the unusual "Song for Alice" and the shortest track, with the longest title "The dark pages of September lead to the new leaves of spring". A little touch of Brian Wilson in "Pet sounds"!!
This album finishes ...
Advantages: ANOTHER GREAT ALBUM BY PAUL WELLER Disadvantages: NONE
My friend introduced PaulWellers music to me about six or seven years ago and i have to admit i love this guy i think he is brilliant, tonight i am going to introduce you to an insight into his new album 'FLY ON THE WALL'
Released ~ Monday 1st September 2003
Label ~ Universal
Cost ~ £14.99 GBP
You can say what you like about PaulWeller but you have to admit the man gives good B-Side. Both The Jam and The Style Council's singles always guaranteed a fantastic flipside.
Indeed, even with the coming of the shiny CD, while others used the new fangled format to fob the public off with endless remixes of the same song, a solo Weller's heart was still in the land of vinyl, striving to give punters those little hidden gems to accompany title tracks.
Which is what makes 'FLY ON THE WALL' such a cracking album. OK, so there ...

Album Notes
Personnel: Paul Weller (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, percussion); Jacko Peake (flute, saxophone, background vocals); Steve White (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Brother Marco (bass); Dr. Robert (bass, background vocals); Dee C. Lee, Camelle Hinds, Carlene Anderson (background vocals). Producers: Paul Weller, Brendan Lynch, Chris Bangs. Engineers: Martin Heyes, Paul Gumersall, Robin Black. Weller's first solo album is stylistically of a piece with his earlier work with the Style Council, which is to say that there's a '60s soul feel to it but it also reflects his passion for various '60s English bands, primarily Traffic. Soul-flavored songs like "Remember How We Started" and "Above the Clouds" are virtual tributes to Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield, but the rest of the album tilts, quite attractively, towards a sort of pastoral, psychedelic R&B reminiscent of Traffic's classic MR. FANTASY.
