more than one-album wonders, and they hit it out of the park with this follow-up. The Boys' lyrics are a hysterical deluge of cultural allusion (Ponce De Leon, Japanese baseball legend Sadaharu Oh, and Love Connection's Chuck Woolery all get name-dropped), compressed wordplay, and adenoidal snottiness, but the real stars are the Dust Brothers, whose production is a hip-hop landmark. Their music tracks sound like the history of rock and funk radio boiled down to a pure concentrate--monster jams built out of thousands of unexpected samples (Johnny Cash! The Sweet!). It's a killer party album, kinetic and dense, and it never slows down.--Douglas Wolk

Coming three years after their Hip Hop debut, The Beastie Boys came with their second official album in 1989 with “Paul’s Boutique” and it came as a landmark release for them as (although they had already broke through to the mainstream with their platinum-selling debut, this one took the New Yorkers (whose primary members include Mike D, MCA and Ad-Rock) to a new height with what is now considered a classic by all musical standards.

After some initial shout-outs,. You find that the band dive into a heavy single from the album and one which forces you to have fun as they get into one where they jump n top of a range of classic samples and staples in the Hip Hop world to come out with something that suits the kind of funky things that came of their first album, but with a sound which reflected the advancements in the genre much more.

3. “Johnny Ryall”
They move things on by doing things in a similar fashion as they use things from the likes of Kurtis Blow, DJ Grand Wizard Theodore and one of the single form their debut to come out with a tune which you can’t hate on. You also get some live instruments mixed in with the beatbox instrumentals and it just makes things feel much more raw and pure as their work was around this sort of time whilst they do the tag team rhymes.
**Five Stars**
4. “Egg Man”
Coming off a range of film themes, you get a fly jam from the band which seems to bring through the fluidity of the record as you see that this one naturally comes through after what came before it to enable them to come out with another banger of a joint and see them perform a track which reflects the fact that much of what they tended to do with their raps of this type revolved around their humour as they do their own counterpart of what others were doing at the time of sampling classic Blaxploitation films.
**Five Stars**
5. “High Plains Drifter”
Using considerably less samples in this you, you still find that here they need a little something from The Eagles (in addition to a few others) to push them through and give them guidance as you find that with this one they perform one where they come with more of the hardcore material (which comes directly off the beats which they use) in order to do things as in this case they lower the pace, but still come with their intense flows for a killer jam.
**Five Stars**
6. “The Sounds Of Science”
In this one you find that they use a lot of The Beatles along the way to show that they are far from conventional in the Hip Hop world) and it means that it takes things in a new direction as you see that they once again keep it to the low tempo, but instead try out something experimental (as one track on their debut in particular before they suddenly get on some Breakbeats and show that they are very current and far ahead of the others.
**Five Stars**
7. “3-Minute Rule”
You find that with this one the group appear to be tamed as the erratic composition that came before it are lost when you here this one kick into effect and the MCs are put in order, without any interference from the others so they al get their own say on a very Stetsasonic-esque set to bring more amazing results that you can’t really complain about as they just rip it as ever and top anything that has come before.
**Five Stars**
8. “Hey Ladies”
This is a funky jam form the band and one that has them taking things back to the sort of thing that came up with the best results for them as they all just throw in their own thoughts when they feel it is needed and throw don fresh dance cut that is just for the people named in the title. It is killer jam and one which you really can’t get yourself out of once you have had any sort of sample of the quality they come with here.
**Five Stars**
9. “5-Piece Chicken Dinner” (Lude)
10. “Looking Down The Barrel Of A Gun”
Off a killer single and short interlude, you find that with this one you see that the band return back to where they originated, in the world of Rock, but rather than throwing down a Punk tune (as they had on their debut) you see that here they come with some Hard Rock and power through with a tune which has them playing the instruments they had with their previous band to come out with a tune that is able to fit in here without any effort, in spite the obvious elements which make it different to the rest.
**Five Stars**
11. “Car Thief”
Using samples from the likes of Trouble Funk, Funkadelic and Funk Factory, you get a tune that is just pure Funk and offers little more than this. Personally, I can’t see what else you could possibly want from a track as they bring it to current times and use things from a variety of eras, from the late sixties Psychedelic years and up to the Naked Funk that was prevalent up to a few years before this would have dropped, for another banger.
**Five Stars**
12. “What Comes Around”
The light groove that you get with this one has them using more of the live instrumentals in a mix with the samples and (very current) electronic percussion to come up with a tune that seems to get them toning things down a bit, but of course this is able to last for lost (or in too many ways) as they shout their way through the tune in Run-D.M.C. fashion to make for a tune you can’t ignore the significance of.
**Five Stars**
13. “Shadrach”
This one, stands out massively on the album and it stands as another on the release that you really can’t do without as you see that in this case (unlike how I believe Run-D.M.C. were really able to do) they perform one where they show exactly how to get a perfect balance of Rock and Hip Hop to come up with something that connects with both scenes. It is a rough one and has more power thn almost any other here.
**Five Stars**
14. “Ask For Janice” (Lude)
15. “B-Boy Bouillabaisse”
The album ends with the three of them, assisted by The Dust Brothers, coming with an epic jam, split up into nine short pieces where they bring together a range of tunes together (that have clearly had a massive impact upon their music) and so after some beatboxing, they just go hard and come with some of the roughest rhymes that have been heard on the whole things for a tune that tops the classic release off in the perfect way.
**Five Stars**
There are few Hip Hop albums that have managed to reach classic status, but there’s no way that this one can be left off the list as they come with an album filled with bangers and no weak points whatsoever (unlike the odd one on their debut) to come out with a record which is able to use all the fun of the mid-eighites sounds in Hip Hop to the hardcore style that Run-D.M.C. innovated for a killer album. It is flawless and although it stays to a distinctive style almost all the way through, the way they limit it means that they are able to explore all aspects of this funky Hip Hop to its maximum potential.
Advantages: Interesting and original music, oldschool hip hop breaks Disadvantages: poor sound quality at times
After reading many reviews of the Beastie boys I decided to go out and buy this album. Boy am I glad that I did! I did some research too about their past.
The Beastie Boys were one of the hit sounds of the 70's and were originally started by Mike D. Their mix of hip hop and funk brought their music originality and their witty lyrics continue to surprise everyone. They basically did what they wanted, when they wanted and didnt care about anybody ... ...are the names

The Beastie Boys: Mike D, Ad-Rock, M.C.A. When The Beastie Boys hit platinum with their debut album, they were instantly labeled the Elvises of rap, accused of being just another bunch of white musicians stealing from black music. But what was overlooked was that the Beasties actually had some interesting ideas to take hip hop to new levels. While in the years to come other white rappers like Vanilla Ice and Jesse Jaymes would prove they were the true cultural thieves, the Beasties defended themselves by recording a seminal rap album, PAUL'S BOUTIQUE. The record was, in fact, so legit that it eroded their commercial appeal in middle America. PAUL'S BOUTIQUE is a sample-fest--a post-modern epic of cut and splice studio wizardry. Taking snippets of music from sources as disparate as Curtis Mayfield, The Beatles, B.D.P., The Ramones and The Jaws soundtrack (as well as countless others), they built songs out of the debris of modern culture. Over these mind-blowing tracks, they weaved tall tales, self-promotional proclamations and sheer non-sense into a singular vision of inspired lunacy. Besides Public Enemy, no one else was producing albums as complex as this. PAUL'S BOUTIQUE sounds two or three years ahead of its time, perhaps this is why the album was considered such a failure upon its release. Whatever the case, there really is no album that sounds quite like this one does; the Beasties returned to the top of the charts a few years later with CHECK YOUR HEAD, but they may never be able to top the originality and depth of their stunning sophomore effort.
