One Of Britain's Finest Female Singers

Advantages: Great Song Choices
Disadvantages: It's Not Big Belt It Out Power Singing

Elkie Brooks was born Elaine Bookbinder in Salford, North West England in 1945 and to my mind is one of Britain's finest ever singers. This album is a superb compilation that has her two hits that are very much associated with her career (Fool If You Think It's Over and Pearl's A Singer) as well as an abundance of great, great songs that she released as singles or as album tracks. She has a husky, soulful, yet understated voice and her delivery and phrasing compliments some very high quality musical arrangement on this album. I would suggest that her talent is such that she sings any song very well. Of particular interest on this album are her versions of Lilac Wine and Don't Cry Out Loud, both of which challenge and are only a tiny bit lower in quality than the versions sung by Nina Simone and Melissa Manchester. A String of Pseudo Pearls

Advantages: Excellent backing tracks, competent vocals, a couple of strong pop hits
Disadvantages: Not much in the way of soul, some dull tracks, all rather dated now

that ? cassette tapes weren?t cheap back then and we didn?t have a lot of money so we tended to record it one week and tape over it the next week, but you get the idea I am sure. From this my love of pop music grew and to this day I still listen to pop songs from the 70s ? and the early 70s in particular ? as there is something I find very appealing about them and the overall musicality of them. One group from this era was the Pearls ? who were basically two fairly nondescript looking female singers with fairly nondescript voices who turned up on "Top of the Pops" occasionally. "Top of the Pops" was as unmissable to me as the chart run down on Radio 1 was. At the time I took this group at face value ? to me they sang pop songs which were simple and similar in style to some of the girl group songs of the 60s that I occasionally heard ...
