The Oyster Band are one of Britain foremost folk rock band. They combine the energy of punk with an in depth knowledge of Britain's musical folk heritage, traditional and modern instrumentation, and an ear for an excellent tune.
This collection draws thirty songs from their formation in the mid eighties up to the onset of the nineties. Their music reflects their resentment to the Thatcherite culture of the time, but folk music is very often about protest.
They write their own music, draw on traditional tunes and cover contempory artists songs.
Thus we get Nick Lowe's "Rose of England" , Billy Bragg's "Between the Wars" and New Orders "Love Vigilantes". They hark back to traditional tunes with "New York Girls" (also covered by Steeleye Span with Peter Sellers), "Molly Bond", and "Star of The County Down".
Their own composition stand up well among the fine covers with "Polish Plain", "The Generals Are Born Again" and "Another Quiet Night in England" being particular stand out songs.
This collection is an absolute treasure trove and a great introduction to the band. It's available for aroud £7.99 from MVC or £10.99 Our Pric/ Virgin / HMV.
