the legendary Peel Sessions. His other band, the Wedding Present, have recorded 11 sessions for the show since 1986, and this new compilation features some of the finest work from his latest project, the keyboard-led, Burt Bacharach-loving, Cinerama. Clearly something in the air at Maida Vale agrees with the singer. Alternative versions of songs from the first two Cinerama albums--a scorching "Maniac" and flute-tinted "146 Degrees"--nestle among some surprise bonus tracks, recorded at two special celebrations of John Peel's life. From an acoustic set recorded at Peel Acres, Sally Murrell sings gently on the Franco-pop "Pacific", and from Peel Night comes "Kerry Kerry" and a hard-edged "Hard Fast And Beautiful". David even throws in a laidback cover of "Elenore", how can you resist? --Jerry Thackray

Advantages: Completes the Nirvana collection Disadvantages: A few fillers
...Incesticide was Nirvana's third album, although I don't consider it a proper album. It was pieced together from BBC session recordings done for John Peel's and Mark Goodier's radio shows, and "B-sides, demo recordings and stuff never before available", as the sticker says. I'm not sure which of the tracks are B-sides and demos, but a couple of them sound like outtakes from the "Bleach" recordings.
The highlights on this record are: Dive, Sliver, Stain, Aero Zeppelin, Big Long Now and Aneurysm. The track "Downer" was also featured on some copies of Nirvana's first album, "Bleach". I think it was probably reissued at some point with this addition.
Due to the way this record was put together, the production is very varied. Molly's Lips and Son Of A Gun sound like they were recorded in a garage, but the sleevenotes say these two were part...

...I listened to the Peelsession when it was broadcast, and i was impressed. I bought this on 12", and now i'm very impressed. Mira Calix used to work for warp records as a publicist, but started releasing her own records on the acclaimed label in 1996..
Speaking of warp records for a moment, they are easily one of the most important electronica record labels in existence. Everything they release is high quality, innovative and unique. How many labels can you say that about? Artists on their roster include Aphex Twin (moved to his own rephlex label in recent years), Autechre, and Squarepusher.
So Mira Calix.. Well, it sounds weird. Think aphex twin's cut-to-f**k beats mixed with Autechre's clicky digital sound and you're getting close. But you're still way off. It's hard to describe without hearing it for yourself.. Melodic and emotive...
