Haircut 100 were built around the voice and songs of Nick Heyward and had a short time at the top in the early 80’s. Despite differences of outlook and opinion within the band, the first flush of success lent enchantment to the Haircuts’ view of life. On their debut single, Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl), a four-to-the-floor beat and scratchy rhythm guitar was augmented by peppy brass to provide an infectious slab of pop that more than nodded to the dancefloor. Heyward’s thin, mannered vocal was perhaps the weakest link, but his engaging grin and cheery, cherubic countenance played a major part in speeding the single to number 4 in the UK chart.
1982 dawned brightly with the January release of Love Plus One, which refined its predecessor’s gauche charm while hinting that Heyward’s lyrics allowed little scope for musical development. Apart from being a number 3 single, the track made a swift reappearance on February’s album, Pelican West. The fact that it was sequenced to follow Favourite Shirts, the album’s opening track, was no coincidence, since these were the highlights of a somehat one-paced set that nevertheless peaked at number 2 in the albums chart. The frothy Fantastic Day which was a number 9 single was also included.
All in all, Haircut 100 were teenybop pap that quickly fell out of sight and left a fairly patchy album to remember them by.
