Additional notes

Album Notes: Despite its sensational cover art, which plays up the American folk legend's time served in jail, this U.K. four-CD box set is a comprehensive overview of Leadbelly's best-known recordings, including John and Alan Lomax's 1930s tapes made for the Library of Congress and the artist's later 1940s recordings, done with a quartet and the harmonica player Sonny Terry. Favorites like \"Goodnight Irene,\" \"Rock Island Line,\" and \"Pick a Bale of Cotton\" sit alongside more contemporary material like \"Howard Hughes,\" about the eccentric millionaire's flying exploits, and \"The Bourgeois Blues\" (later recorded by Ry Cooder, among others) about Leadbelly's racially charged visit to the nation's capital.

Review of 6 And 12 String Guitar - Leo Kottke by nfp2

Advantages: Skilled musicianship, unique interpretations
Disadvantages: None, if you like the genre

.... THE MAN: The 55-year-old Kottke is not a new name on the music scene. But despite a modicum of commercial success he remains somewhat of a cult figure. Like so many of his inspirations and mentors, Kottke seems content to have contributed to a uniquely American musical repository. Most of his early recordings, including this one on the now-defunct "roots" label Takoma, eschew any attempt at mass sales. Nonetheless, though Takoma has ceased to exist, Kottke’s early recordings including this one are easy to find on the likes of amazon.com, CD Now, half.com, etc. A self-taught guitarist who started on the trombone, Kottke has drawn heavily on the likes of Leadbelly, Robbie Basho, Ralph Towner, Joe Pass, and, of course, his true mentor, the inimitable John Fahey, founder of Takoma in a Washington, DC suburb in 1959. But Kottke has also drawn... Read review

Unplugged, Outplugged but loved!
Review of Unplugged In New York - Nirvana (US) by kurt187

Advantages: Different
Disadvantages: one or two tunes that drag out a little

...MTV Unplugged in New York is a live album by the American grunge band, Nirvana. It was released in November 1994. featuring covers of songs by the Vaselines, David Bowie and the Meat Puppets, and Leadbelly" The CD includes songs that were not included on the live TV session! Which is a bonus! very different to all Nirvanas heavy stuff on the rest of the albums but theres some fantastic redemptions! Tracks:- 1. About A Girl - A very simple but effective song! Its like the nursery rhymes when you a kid so simple but yet forever rememberer! A great song to open the set with! 2. Come As You Are - Acoustic but somehow they still seem to have that amazing underwater effect to the version on Nevermind! This one always impresses me! 3. Jesus Doesn't Want Me For A Sunbeam - A redemption of a christian song I think but Nirvana do... Read review

Can't get enough of this
Review of Mirror Conspiracy, The - Thievery Corporation by goran74

Advantages: Music to keep smile on your face
Disadvantages: none

...Since first time this album was in my CD, I was going back to TC mucis all over again, probably on daily basis. Fluid sound and mix of different styles blended by two Washington DC DJ's create perfect harmony that makes you like music more and more. TC have this magical formula to make music more interesting and explore sounds in many ways. Some of tracks, like Lebanese Blonde and Mirror Conspiracy perfectly match your late afternoon mood while relaxing after work, or early morning on Sunday. Whatever your music taste is, TC will have something to offer you on this album. It is smart, happy, thoughtful and creative music for range of generations and listeners. Try other TC albums as well and you won't be dissapointed.... Read review
