Released in 2002, Corporation 187's 'Perfection in Pain' is a mixture of melodic death metal in the gothenburg vein and thrash, with the ten songs on offer all filled with angular, ascerbic riffs, chuggy, stop-start grooves and lamenting guitar solos, that remind of fellow swedes At The Gates, ('Slaugher of the Soul' era).
The vocalist also does a fairly good job of impersonating At The Gates vocalist Tomas Lindberg, spewing forth some nasty abrasive, rasping screams over the galloping, despondent thrash riffs. The production is pretty good but perhaps a little tinny, and although the album is fairly well written and enjoyable there is a nagging feeling throughout that its all been done better elsewhere. It would be reasonable to say that the whole thing sounds like Slaugher of the Soul-lite, but given that that 'Slaughter...' was one of the best extreme metal albums to come out in the 90s this isnt a particularly bad thing, and whilst fairly derivative, 'Perfection in Pain', remains well executed and is a good, solid listen and worth a look for anyone into At The Gates, Carnal Forge or The Haunted.
