Advantages: amazing guitar playing, mood-lifting music with a big heart Disadvantages: weak lyrics, nothing like as original as I anticipated
It’s a while now since I bought this album and I have meant to review it from my first listen, but since then it’s had very limited playing-time and it got relegated to the sidelines, not through any fault of its own but just because it happened to come along just as I discovered my favourite band ever in the universe (but that’s another story entirely). It still merits my recommendation if not only for the fact that, when I first bought The Darkness ... ...impressions to the albums by the said other band! Let’s leave aside the fact that in my opinion, this album was extremely over-hyped and that it was nowhere near as mindblowingly brilliant, nor as cataclysmically different as I had imagined it would be, and thus a sense of mild disappointment will probably always arise when listening to most of it. Let it be noted, though, that I did say ‘most of it’ – as it sure has its sublime moments perfect for ...

In an earlier and simpler time it would be sufficient to call the Darkness a rock band and leave it at that, but the modern musical age is a complex beast and so in keeping with the times a new term is needed. In a time when we have Nu-metal, Industrial, Hardcore, Thrash Metal, Ambient, Hip-Hop, Trip-Hop, Garage, House, Shed, Conservatory and cupboard under the stairs music (some of which I made up, but you get the point), old school kick arse rock ... ...it is. In a time when the rock fraternity seem to largely take themselves too seriously, The Darkness seem to have proved that you can take your craft totally seriously yet still inject a humour and theatrical quality to it by poking fun at yourself a bit.
They are also a band that is not afraid to wear their influences on their sleeves. They not only doff their caps to the great bands of an earlier era, but throw in the jacket and trousers too. ...

Advantages: Skilled musicians... Disadvantages: ...not great lyricists.
I’m a fickle little man. Fickle like pickle. Who knows how or why this character trait came to be in the brain of Pepper. But it’s there all the same. Nudging my sensibilities. Mooning my reasonability. And so I come to review the only record in my CD collection that I’m still not 100% sure about. Ladies and germs, this is the debut long player from the Darkness.
Brief history of the band – they’re British, they play retro-style hard rock in the ... ...need to know.
***THE PACKAGING***
Nice retro kinda cover with a nuddie lady beckoning a spaceship from the skies with a couple of ping-pong bats. The usual explicit lyrics sticker. The booklet provides song lyrics (which in the best tradition of all song lyric booklets, does not seem to quite match the words in the songs). and lots of photos of the boys, including a dreadful “centrefold” with the band back-to back in pairs. In a field. In silhouette.

Permission to Land
***********************
Permission to Land hasn't just landed - it's made a Deep Impact. Fantastic guitar riffs, thumping rock beats, quirky lyrics, and THAT voice. It's just such a breath of fresh air. This really is the first real Glam Rock band to fill the void that was left by Queen all those years ago. The track list is as follows:
1 Black Shuck
2 Get Your Hands off my Woman
3 Growing on Me
4 I Believe ... ...that there is something on Permission to Land for everyone - even people who are not into Rock, and it is Rock that the Darkness are blessed with. I find them absolutely inspiring and I'm sure many talented musicians will be given hope by their explosion onto the scene.
Is this the most important album of the last 20 years?? Maybe - it will be if it stops Fame Accademy 3 from happening.
Thanks for reading my review and I hope to speak to you all ...

Permission To Land
------------------
After being signed to Must Destroy, an Atlantic Records Label, The Darkness got their musical genius working, and the result was the debut album, 'Permission To Land'. And what a result it is, I can honestly say that this is by far the best album of the year, of many years infact. It offers fantastic lyrics, riffs, and vocals. Here's a little more information on each song ... ...Because it is a collection of everything, it's original and it doesn't dwell upon or focus on the little black clouds that follow you around, it lifts them.
