I'm not the poster woman for this kind of music, i'm a 30 something technie but trust me when I tell you, that not since the likes of Paul Rodgers (of Free fame) or Graham Bonnet (Rainbow) has a voice of such power and grace ever been heard.
Breaking Benjamin's front man, Ben Burnley, has the kind of voice that can lull you to sleep, or inject such energy and power into you that you feel able to do anything.
This CD has it all. It shows the whole range of Burnleys voice and the musical support he has behind him. Helped in his writing by former Smashing Pumpkins singer-songwriter "Billy Corgan" they have managed to produce songs with exceptional lyrics, some very dark, but nonetheless inspiring and thought provoking.
Evil Angel is a prime example, a gorgeous rocky piece of music behind it, it lulls slightly to allow Burnley's voice to shine before winding it up again in-between.
Breath - another track which shines on the CD is constructed perfectly. Sometimes bands get lost when blending the powerful playing in the background with the voice of its lead singer, but they seem to have been able to find the balance between the two.
Perhaps that has something to do with the fact that some control is held by Burnley as the guitarist.
This CD starts well, and continues to fulfill expectations. On the strength on this album I would quite happily pay to own all of their CD's without listening to much of them beforehand. Perhaps this CD is just a shining example, I do hope that the rest of their arsenal stand up to this one.
In a time when you can so easily own just a "few" tracks from any given album, you really would not want to miss any of the tracks from this CD and on the strength of the above two, I downloaded (paid for!) the rest of the album from iTunes.
WELL WORTH IT! For anybody who appreciates good, unpretentious, and non-teen rock, you need to listen to this.
