Advantages: Bonus tracks, intimate recording Disadvantages: Not the greatest sound quality

'The Piano' is a stunning album which features Hancock on his own at the piano. Tracks 8-11 feature previously unrealised material, which are different takes of earlier music on the album. This enables the listener to get a little closer to the creative mind of Herbie Hancock.
The piano was an early "disc to disc" ... ...listener has a unique chance to hear Hancock in action on his own.
My personal favourite is track 4 'Harvest Time'. In this track Hancock is in complete control of the music and as a listener we are left on the edge of our seats wondering what is going to happen next. Not as ground breaking as some of his other albums e.g. 'Headhunters' however this is one of Hancock’s most creative albums. ... more

Advantages: Faultless album Disadvantages: Absolutely none
in a comfy chair, close your eyes and de-stress!
The quietest one is number 10 where it is just Bonnie Raitt's vocals and HerbieHancock's piano that delivers. A jazzy feel comes through both the vocals and the instrumentals.
11.THE ROAD'S MY MIDDLE NAME
Wonderfully blues, baby! I love this track because of it's blues feel and Raitt's raunchy vocals.
Good foot-stomping song to end the album on.
There is such a variety of musical genre here such as blues, rock & pop, a little jazz, which is impeccably mixed and produces a crackingly sharp and faultless production.
The album is still easily obtainable at all good record stores and online.
Great album, and highly recommended. ...
Advantages: One of the greatest bassists to ever walk the planet Disadvantages: Jazz isn't for everyone
of the track flows continuously into ?Word of mouth? which is a display of bass playing genius/madness with two percussionists, Peter Erskine and Don Alias. This track explains why people either love or hate jazz. It sounds unstructured, everyman for himself noise with firecrackers and odd sounding instruments which puts a lot of people off. On the other hand it shows how musicians can come together and create something that is unstructured and a bit mad but actually be creating something brilliant. Then, be able to go off stage, drive to another venue and be able to create it all over again.
Track five is the last of the songs to be taken from the Word of Mouth album (the first five are all from this album) and includes the legendary HerbieHancock on Piano. This is the sort of song you can fully imagine coming from the corner of a nice ...
Advantages: Awe-inspiring jazz! Disadvantages: It's not free
's that has ever existed. It takes artificial harmonics to a whole new level and teaches the bassist so much about his or her guitar. In interviews with great modern bassists such as Victor Wooten when asked about who they were inspired by when Jaco comes up (he always does) Portrait of Tracey is one of the tracks that has been most inspirational.
"(Used to be a) Cha Cha" is on the CD twice. The original record doesn't have the second version which is basically an alternate take with Jaco, Hubert Laws (Flute) and HerbieHancock jamming. I always think it's great when you can listen to a song played differently, that's what makes live music and jamming so amazing.
Forgotten Love, track nine, is a mini concerto written by Jaco specifically for HerbieHancock's piano and Jaco doesn't perform on it. Again, this just adds that little extra ...

Album Notes
Previously available only as a limited edition, Japanese import. Personnel: Herbie Hancock (piano). Engineers: Fred Catero; David Rubinson; Tomoo Suzuki; Brian Bell. Liner Note Authors: Herbie Hancock; David Rubinson; Bob Belden. Recording information: CBS Studios, Tokyo, Japan (10/25/1978 - 10/26/1978). Herbie Hancock never really focused on solo piano. However, this 1978 release, which was previously only available in Japan, is a rare gem in the Hancock discography. Thanks to this overdue 2004 reissue, the listener is invited to explore the musical mind of this pianist in an up-close and intimate setting. All 11 tracks on THE PIANO are quite reflective, with Hancock employing many rich chordal textures and winding melodic gestures throughout. On "My Funny Valentine," Hancock combines the harmonic palette of Bill Evans with his own distinctive phrasing and unexpected modal shifts. His own composition "Blue Otani" is the only bluesy piece on this disc, and here Hancock slyly suggests the stride piano tradition without ever really playing in this style. "Harvest Time" is the most atmospheric piece on the album. As Hancock's fingers glide over the keys, one can almost envision the first blush of daybreak on a farm. For anybody seeking to better understand the conceptual and technical wizardry of Hancock, THE PIANO is a priceless find.
