I, like most "D cisples" have been waiting 5 years for this one and its finally here!
At first, when I found out it clocked in at a paltry 33mins long I was pretty annoyed and started thinking that maybe it wouldn't be as good as I had hoped.
Boy I was wrong! The thing is, its 33mins of pure goodness, and lets face it, most longer albums dont have 33mins of good stuff in them, so when you think about it, its a more "efficient" album, they've cut the crap and kept in the rock!
Lets break down the 33mins anyway, theres only 2 songs in the ablum that are over 3mins long, with only 8-9 "proper" songs, the rest are like small jingles, which serve to keep the story of the Ds journey to greatness going along. This album doesn't have as many conversations and barmy events as the previous album, which in my opinion, makes for a faster paced album that you can't help but listen to again and again. In the previous album a lot of the events and conversations, while funny at first, began to grate after extended listening. This album doesn't suffer in that respect.
Heres the track listing and times:
1. Kickapoo (4:14) 2. Classico (0:58) 3. Baby (1:36) 4. Destiny (0:37) 5. History (1:42) 6. The Government Totally Sucks (1:34) 7. Master Exploder (2:24) 8. The Divide (0:22) 9. Papagenu (He's My Sassafrass) (2:24) 10. Dude (I Totally Miss You) (2:53) 11. Break In-City (Storm The Gate!) (1:22) 12. Car Chase City (2:42) 13. Beelzeboss (The Final Showdown) (5:35) 14. POD (2:32) 15. The Metal (2:45)
As I said, everything in this is great, but my personal favourites are Kickapoo (the story of how JB left home in search of greatness, featuring vocals from Meatloaf and Dio), Master Exploder - A wild track featuring excellent riffs and showcases Jacks amazing vocal skills, Papagenu- which I defy anyone to not smile at when they listen to it, its a really cheery tune with (of course) a dosage of rock, and finally Beelzeboss- which has some amazing guitar work and laugh out loud lyrics.
Which, I must add, are exceptionally explicit. But thats what we bought this for isn't it? The Ds use of the F word in this album borders on art! And who am I to criticise art?
For those new to the D, I would suggest picking up their previous album "Tenacious D" first, as it introduces you more to the crazy world of the D and their claim as "The Greatest Band on Earth", which is the foundation for this new album. There are a lot of in-jokes that non-D fans or new-D fans may not pick up initially!
A special note goes to the artwork on the cover, which is both hilarious and very artistic indeed. If you're quick you can also pick up a limited edition 3d cover. I am a little dissapointed that it does not contain lyrics for the songs, but I suppose learning the lyrics is all part of the fun with Tenacious D..
Well there you have it! Many will criticise this album as perhaps more of a cash-in for their new movie (also titled "The Pick Of Destiny"), rather than the stand alone album we've been waiting 5 years for, but I would disagree. The album oozes rock and fun and above all, a level of quality that shouts a lot louder than the cries of "its too short".
Favourite Line: "The demon code prevents me, from declining a rock-off challenge..."
Its rock, its pure, and it kicks ass!
Long live the D!

Nice review! I'm a fan of the D as well. So much so that myself and 4 of my friends have a 5 a side football team in school called The Cleveland Steamers. Now that's dedication hehe - Ten

I am afraid freakishkid has unfairly rated - they have rated based on their own opinion and not the usefulness of your review. This would be very helpful to anyone thinking about buying it!

Whilst your review is reasonably worded and presented (if a little short) I'm afraid to say that I couldn't disagree more - this album was, quite frankly, *incredibly* disappointing - much like the film that all the songs (less perhaps one, I think) are actually from. True D fans should avoid it like the plague - just stick to the first album, unless you want to be left feeling empty and used.
Here's hoping that when I see them live in December that they focus on the OLD material over the new...!!

Advantages: Tenacious D's excellent style, very funny and great fun to listen to. Disadvantages: It's too closely linked to the film, perhaps too much swearing.
