organ); Nick Mason (drums).Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London, England.Pink Floyd's debut was its only recording based on the vision of founding singer/guitarist Syd Barrett, an art student whose world revolved around music, mysticism, and liberal doses of hallucinogens. The band's moniker was taken from the first names of Georgia bluesmen Pink Anderson and Floyd Council (an album of theirs was a favorite of Barrett's), and the album's title came from a chapter of Kenneth Grahame's children's classic, THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS (also a staple of Barrett's library).Recorded at Abbey Road at the same time The Beatles were cutting SGT. PEPPER, PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN is an avant-garde pastiche of trippy improvisation and snappy pop snippets--a blurring of musical borders that went far beyond what the Fab Four were doing a couple of rooms away. (Producer Norman Smith had been The Beatles' chief engineer for much of the early '60s.) Instrumental space-jams like Pow R. Toc H. and Interstellar Overdrive smashed the conventionality of the pop mainstream by opening up traditional song structures, as bits of Rick Wright's reverb-soaked Farfisa organ and Barrett's scratchy guitar float in and out of the mix. The other side of Barrett's musical expression was an ability to write shorter pop songs that were similar to traditional fare only in length--acid-fueled observations of a Siamese cat on Lucifer Sam, and child-like tales on The Gnome and Bike.[Reviews]Rolling Stone (12/9/99, p.82) - 4.5 stars out of 5 - ...a masterpiece of the [psychedelia] genre....the golden achievement of Syd Barrett....a milestone in what soon would be called 'head music'...Q (8/99) - Included in Q Magazine's Best Psychedelic Albums of All TimeQ (6/00, p.69) - Ranked #55 in Q's 100 Greatest British AlbumsQ (1/95, p.275) - 5 Stars - Indispensable - ...PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN is, even counting SGT. started out as an R&B combo in the mid-60s, Pink Floyd's leader, guitarist Syd Barrett, soon began piloting the band through unprecedented sonic excursions typified by the title of their 1967 debut album's most celebrated track--the outsized instrumental "Interstellar Overdrive." Equally adept at composing catchy-sounding, Gothic-themed pop songs such as "See Emily Play," "The Scarecrow" and "The Gnome," Barrett seemed destined for greatness--that is, until psychedelic drugs got the best of him, and he abandoned the band to bassist Roger Waters and new guitarist David Gilmour. The rest, as they say, is history. --Billy Altman

Advantages: The only complete Barrett / Floyd Album Disadvantages: Bike
...Piper at tThe Gates of Dawn takes its Title from Kenneth Graham's The Wind in The Willows.
This was Syd Barrett's only album with PinkFloyd and the cracks were already showing. He would appear on one more track with them 'Jugband Blues' on 'A Saucerful of Secrets'.
The first side of the album is first grade pscychedelic rock from with opening two tracks Astronomy Domine and Lucifer Sam particularly outstanding and menacing. The album calms down until the nine minute improvisation Interstellar Overdrive. Apparently Syd was stoned while they were mixing it and thats why you get the whole mix going from speaker to speaker during the outro.
The remaining tracks are a bit hippy dippy folky childish and are dispensible, but this is still an essential album.
Make sure that you hear it....

Advantages: Good UK Psychedelia Disadvantages: Not as consistant as Pink Floyd's other releases
...By the time Pinkfloyd had released their debut album,'Piper at the gates of dawn', they had already had two top ten singles but neither have made this record. Perhaps Syd Barrett, their lead singer at this time, thought the tracks too poppy for an album that was ground breaking in Britsh Psychedelia. They were famously interviewed, around the time this was released, and were accused of regressing back to childhood and not making a credible contribution to music. It certainly is an experimental album but has some gems on it from a time where there was a lot of changes in the way people thought. 'Lucifer sam' is a UK Psych classic, it's PinkFloyd you can dance to. The band used the latest studio techniques available at the time, which were limited. They even changed the record level from left to right, and alternated between the two...

Advantages: Some of the best early Floyd Disadvantages: Tracks taken from progressive albums so they lose something
...to play in the background at social gatherings if your friends are into Progressive Rock, this is a popular album. I have many memories associated with the songs on the album and of places where I've seen the cover, it's generally upbeat and good for drinking to.
It's a great way to first listen to early Floyd, try "Piper at the Gates Of Dawn" and "Atom Heart Mother" if you like this, it's quite differnet to their later albums you'll find....
