Pippin [Remastered] - Broadway Cast

Advantages: An Innovitave new idea for a musical
Disadvantages: It's kind of the same all the way through

...different songs telling the same story. It didn't really go anywhere or develop. The songs themselves weren't bad. A few catchy tunes and well sung, but my one compaint is that nearly every song used a 3 or 4 part counterpoint. I can see the effect they were going for but using it in every second song just makes it hard to follow whats happening with so many people singing at once. I'm not aware of any other work by the writers (Mark Holman & Greg Kotis) but the music is similar in style to a lot of Stephen Shwartz music. (Wicked, Pippin, etc...) The CD inlay and sleeve are actually very good (as are all the musicals on the RCA label it seems). It has a good number of colour stills from the broadway show and full lyrics. Disadvantages: some people with ignore it as it is a musical

...I performed this muscial in 2000 and bought the CD for the purose! You cannot help singing along to classics like "I like to be in America" and "I feel Pretty". The cast are naturally exceedingly talented and when dancing along it is nice to pretend you are the one singing! Some songs are comical for example "Officer Krupke" Some or Sinister for example "Cool" Some are full of anticipation "Tonight" Some are full of Pride "Jets song" Some are full of dreams "Somewhere" There is definately something for everyone regardless of whether you are a hardcore musicals fan or a musical hater. Not all the songs are soppy or sad and the tunes are catchy and make you tap to the beat! I would recommend this as a musical and as a CD as you can follow the story more or less through only the music. The story is a typical Romeo and Juliette tale... Read review

...emulated since. If you think of Woodstock but more choral that gives you an idea of the music style. Now this Deluxe Edition comes with two two CDs the first one is the original Broadway cast recording from 1968. Now this is great because it has has some really good singing on it, and Claude and Berger are played by the two writers Rado and Ragni. Now, on the second disc is the original Off-Broadway cast from 1967. Now some of the singing and the quality of recording isn't quite as good, but there's an amazing energy on that recording. The original off broadway show was put on in a Night Club in New York and the cast actually comprised of "Hippys" rather than Actors. Thats what gives it the lovely unfinished but real feal too it.
