Advantages: Accessible staging, good balance in programming, great education programmes Disadvantages: Singing is not always consistently amazing
As an aspiring opera singer (currently working in admin - oh, the glamour! - but hoping to go back to college in the near future), I try to attend as much live opera as I can. Living in London is great for this - we are spoilt with 2 international level opera houses, as well as numerous touring companies and high standard amateur productions. English NationalOpera is generally seen as the Royal Opera House's more accessible sibling - slightly cooler, slightly more modern. All productions are staged in English and the singing is generally of a very high standard.
English NationalOpera's home is the Coliseum on St Martin's Lane, just off Trafalgar Square, so easily accessible from Charing Cross Station (Mainline or underground) or bus routes 3, 6, 9, 11, 12, 13, 15, 23, 24, 29, 53, 77a, 88, 91, 139, 159, 176, or if you're travelling by ...
Advantages: Good transport links, usually good weather! Disadvantages: Gets quite busy during summer months.
Penzance is the primary town of West Corwall (Penwith) and is popular with locals and tourists alike. It boasts a shopping centre, leisure centre, and close proximity to many beaches such as Long Rock and Marazion.
Close by is the popular destination St Michael's Mount, and Lands End. It is the ideal place to stay during a holiday in Cornwall. Penzance also has the only seafront promenade in Cornwall, there are many things to see and do in this town. Why not go and see a show at the Acorn Theatre, or take a swim in the Jubilee Pool, a 1930s outdoor swimming pool? There is a cinema, perfect for a rainy day, and plenty of places for a nice walk on a clear day.
Due to its extreme south-westerly position, Penzance often has some of the best weather in the UK.
The town is well connected by public transport with regular train services ...
Advantages: Bustling, lively, Excellent for rainy days Disadvantages: Small beach area if you want that sort of holiday
shops selling pottery and carvings etc.,
There is also an amusement arcade for the kids if it's wet.
For shipping enthusiasts there is a large quayside with ships from foreign shores anchored and it is even possible to take a ferry over to the Scilly Isles - although I personally found this journey rather long and boring.
There is a buzz in Penzance which you will only match in Truro once in Cornwall, so if you're fed up with the smaller quainter areas this is the place to go.
There are many old fashioned pubs (the ones that don't have disco music blasting out). We actually sat and had a pub meal in one that had a resident seagull. Apparently he goes in every day for his dinner and we certainly witnessed him arriving on cue. One pub even has it's own Pirate on guard ....Look for him on the roof down a small back road.
