After listening to quite a few tracks from thier old albums (Transatlanticism and Photo Album) I was expecting great things from Death Cab for Cuties latest album; "Plans"
First of all, don't be put off by the name! This isn't a hardcore rock band who scream out horrifying lyrics about death. Far from it. This US indie group present you with a sweet and peacful sound that will lull you into meditation.
Admittedly ... ...remarkably tranquil and serene Death Cab sound again
Their music is a thing of beauty - something to listen to as you stare at a starlight sky, something to accompany the rush of the sea and something to make you fall asleep on the way to work. This music is dangerously good.
This album is definatly as good as previous ones, Death Cab have kept that remarkably tranquil and serene sound flowing.

Admittedly it did take a few listens before I found that remarkably tranquil and serene Death Cab sound again

This ladies and gentlemen is pure music. Original melodies, beautiful crafted lyrics and stunning rhythms. Buy it. Buy it now.
Advantages: Great lyrics, good melodies. Disadvantages: Not as good as previous albums.
...Transatlanticism, I would say that Plans is the dawn of a new direction with Death Cab For Cutie: A blend of pop-rock, with the likes of Soul Meets Body's ditty tunes, and thoughtful slow rock, with I Will Follow You Into The Dark, a touching song about a tragic loss. The lyrics on all of the songs are brilliant, as always, with Ben Gibbard's thoughtful singing style perfectly reflecting the style of his lyrics. If I were to reccommend one track ...

Advantages: Wonderfully different, memorable words Disadvantages: Perhaps a little slow
I'd never heard of Death Cab For Cutie until a friend from work played me some of their stuff. They have some example tracks on their website, and I was drawn in to it instantly. I just had to buy this album!
Their lyrics are of love, laughter, pain and sorrow, in a wide mix of ways. Lines such as "Love is watching someone die. Who's gonna watch you die?" from What Sarah Said, "I stare at my shoes in the ICU" and from Soul Meets Body "in my head ... ...far off destinations so they may have a chance of finding a place where they're far more suited than here". With 11 tracks, and with such a range of emotions, I guarantee you will find a lyric that will stick in your mind.
The eleven tracks are titled:
1. Marching Bands of Manhattan
2. Soul Meets Body
3. Summer Skin
4. Different Names For The Same Thing
5. I Will Follow You Into The Dark
6. Your Heart Is An Empty Room
7. Someday You Will ...

Advantages: lyrics!! Disadvantages: few weak tracks
I have to admit I was cynical towards this album - what could possibly follow Transatlanticism? Plans didn't quite do it for me so I wasn't feeling too positive; however, DeathCab For Cutie have done it again - by 'it' I mean manage to completely blow me away with a CD. As usual, Gibbard's lyrics are a main factor towards their success, and in my opinion, this beats all of their previous work. Best tracks are "Cath" and "Grapevine Fires", not so strong are "Talking Bird" and "You Can Do Better Than Me" - DeathCab For Cutie often have a habit for dragging out the same chord for far too long - sometimes it works, as in "I Will Possess Your Heart"; sometimes it doesn't. Overall I am incredibly impressed and would quote this as one of my favourite albums of all time. ...

Death Cab For Cutie: Christopher Walla, Benjamin Gibbard, Jason McGerr, Nicholas Harmer. Recording information: Longview Farms, North Brookfield, Massachusetts. The success of Death Cab For Cutie's TRANSATLANTICISM, and Death Cab main man Ben Gibbard's debut album with the Postal Service, combined to make PLANS one of the most heavily anticipated indie-rock records in many moons. Anyone who thought the band's move to a major label would rob DCFC's unique brand of literate, melancholy music of its legendary intensity needn't have worried--PLANS is one of the group's most accomplished and emotionally resonant efforts. Sonically, the disc has a Beatlesque anything-goes attitude and attention to arrangement details. "Summer Skin" is driven by a military-style snare pattern and elliptical bass line but sprinkled with atmospheric sound effects. The throbbing dance-rock beat of "Different Names" is offset by delicate xylophone and percolating synthesizer. The disc's highlight, however, may be "Someday You Will Be Loved," which is the kind of simple, irony-free love ballad that stands as a great song with or without production tricks. All the while, Gibbard's artful, introspective lyrics consistently excite the ear with quirky turns of phrase and descriptive imagery. Both a step forward and a refining of past glories, PLANS is a record filled with quietly powerful moments.
