Advantages: Pushing the boundaries Disadvantages: Some misses
aborigine. Four members of the Irish band Planxty were recruited for Night Of The Swallow, while German bassist Eberhard Weber appeared on the eerie Houdini.
The Dreaming was Kate Bush?s least accessible album - a fact reflected in sharply decreased record sales and a rapid fall out of the charts. Despite that, I love it and it remains my favourite Kate Bush album. ...
Advantages: moving, different, good for pub sing alongs Disadvantages: not for people already feeling depressed
I love this album.I love it so much I used to make my Thai lodger listen to it after our weekly bonding pub sessions. She didn't get it! I first heard the title song "Ride On" 18 years in our local music playing pub and have sang this and other songs so often using my guitar and my Christy Moore song book that the book's fallen apart!
Background
Christy was born 1945 in County Kildare (Eire) and was one of the founding members of "Planxty "-an Irish folk band who shared the stage with Donovan in County Galway in the 1970's.He eventually left to set up another band "Moving Hearts" and then went solo.He has an interest in songs which are involved in social or political commentary.I've seen him live twice at the Hexagon in Reading and it was fantastic.I had to drag my husband-ageing grumpy biker-kicking and screaming the first time but ...
Advantages: A living legend Disadvantages: He's retired now
worked with some of the biggest names in Irish music, particularly during spells with bands such as Planxty and Moving Hearts. Laterly he has even collaberated with the likes of U2's Bono for his 'Graffiti Tongue' album. Unfortunately recent health worries have forced Christy into semi-retirement, but his music lives on in the many many albums that he has recorded. If you have not heard Christy sing then please try to do so soon, your life will be enriched for the experience. Cheers Christy - you're still 'the man'. ...
Planxty are known both for their ability to perform great versions of traditional Irish tunes, and for their tremendous skill as musicians. Blending beautiful instrumental sections (thanks mostly to the brilliant Uilleann piper, Liam O'Flynn) with passionate singing, this sadly now-defunct band appeals to both purists and lay listeners. This eponymously-titled album opens with "Raggle Taggle Gypsy/Tabhair Dom Do Lamh," beginning with a vocal followed by an extended Uilleann pipe solo. "Junior Crehan's Favourite/Corney is Coming" is a virtuoso reel that features tin whistle, bodhran, and Uilleann pipes. Finally, "Si Bheag, Si Mhor/Follow Me Up to Carlow" is another fine pipe feature complemented by wonderful acoustic guitar fingerpicking. A compelling album that demonstrates the superb instrumental and vocal abilities of the band's members, PLANXTY is a recording that will stand the test of time.
