I spent my time thinking about a suitable album to review, I've never reviewed an album before as I have found that the good reviews I have read seem quite hard going from a writers perspective. With the competition this month being on albums I wanted to try and review something that others won't. So I ditched my more modern collection of Athlete, Killers, Keane and so on and decided to go for a classic. QUEEN!
Now if there has ever been a band good enough to survive the generations and still sound up-to date and basically fantastic then Queen have got to be it. The band, fronted by Freddie Mercury knew how to mix the funky with the average to come out with some of the most memorable tracks of the 20th Century and although Queen still live on, the tragic death of Freddie Mercury did mar their blossoming career. It's always the musical genius' that sadly pass on before their time.
Now obviously Queen have numerous albums that I could review but I decided upon their 'Platinum Collection' as it's the only one I own. It covers Queens three greatest hits albums. The track listings are below for anyone wishing to see what's available but I'm not going to review every track. Obviously the album includes all of Queens most memorable songs such as Bohemian Rhapsody and A Kind of Magic, from songs that get your feet tapping to really moving
pieces, this album has it all.
PACKAGING
The album comes in a Platinum box big enough to hold the three CD's inside. Queens symbol is printed on the front in black and it looks quite classy. It's a basic cardboard box covering the plastic CD's inside but it's simplicity just shows that you don't need the hype to sell classic music. When you pull out the CD box it is basically a double CD carrier again with the same simple platinum colouring. There is a picture of each original album cover on the front and the word QUEEN. When you open the box the CD's have the same pictures on the front as the original albums, two being pictures of Queen and the Greatest Hits 2 album a simple yet understated blue background with the Queen logo. In fact it is almost identical the covering of this collection but blue instead of silver. With this collection you get a little booklet that is full of interesting information about the band and their albums. It is definitely one of those booklets that is worth a read.
MY OPINION
I have read reviews that talk about every song but feel that with this album it is a pointless exercise, the review would be boring because of the amount of songs to cover, so basically I am going to give you my opinion of each album enclosed in this collection.
GREATEST HITS 1 TRACK LISTING Bohemian Rhapsody Another one bites the dust Killer Queen Fat bottomed girls Bicycle Race You're my best friend Don' stop me now Save Me Crazy little thing called love Somebody to love Now I'm here Good old fashioned lover-boy Play the Game Flash Seven seas of Rhye We will rock you We are the Champions
This album is packed with a collection of classic songs that will be remembered for generations and deservedly so. Many of the songs were written by Freddie Mercury and the musical genius that is Queen is quite obviously demonstrated throughout this album. These songs are rare breed and it would be hard to find music today that matches up to this kind of talent. If you want music that doesn't necessarily require listening to yet if you do listen you'll get many messages then this is the album. The music is mixed so in some cases the songs are upbeat and generally rocking and others are more mellow and easy to listen to.
GREATEST HITS 2
A kind of Maigc Under Pressure Radio Ga Ga I want it all I want to break free Innuendo It's a hard life Breakthru Who wants to live Forever Headlong The Miracle I'm Going Slightly Mad The Invisible Man Hammer to Fall Friends will be Friends The Show must go on One Vision
To me this is the fastest pace of the three albums. It really is a foot tapper and a very memorable album. Again the various different ways of expressing their emotions are found through the music but each song is distinctively recognisable as Queen. This album probably holds the majority of the more well known songs yet I still find it surprising just how many fantastic songs Queen made. It's not the Greatest Hits albums you get today where the artist just put all there songs on an album and call it their Greatest Hits. This really is something to shout about.
GREATEST HITS 3 The Show must go on Under Pressure Barcelona Too much love will kill you Somebody to Love You don't fool me Heaven for everyone Las Palabras de Amor Driven by you Living on my own Let me live The great pretender Princes of the Universe Another one bites the dust No-one but you These are the days our lives Thanks God it's Christmas
You may have noticed that a lot of these songs have already featured on the previous two albums. However, the versions on this album are not lead by Freddie Mercury on vocals. Without Freddie Queen followed their own advice and ensured that 'the show must go on' and did this by getting some of the most talented vocalists of our time to lead their songs for and with them. Although I think that covers are fantastic and a lovely tribute I also find it hard to enjoy the songs as much without Freddie's distinctive voice blasting through my speakers. This is probably my least favourite of the three collaborations however it is still worth a listen.
OVERALL Overall I think that this collection is probably the best Greatest Hits album I have ever heard and am proud to display it on my CD rack. I urge any Queen fans to ensure they purchase it and any none Queen fans to give it a try. This truly is an album of Greatest Hits and the songs you haven't heard of should be heard. Through listening to this album I feel that we all need to do our duty in ensuring that Queen are not forgotten and pass their talent on from generation to generation. You can buy the platinum collection from play.com for only £12.99 or most music stores at about £19.99. To me, either price is a bargain as you are getting three great albums packed with great songs.
You can visit Queen's website at www.Queenonline.com which gives you information about their history, albums, tours and the 'we will rock you' musical.
So come on guys, don't let me down, add this to your collection.
Thanks for reading Be good Jayne x x
