According to Moby, "In addition to these 18 songs there are another 200 that were written for the album that didn't make it on."
Why is the album called Play? "Because there's a playground near my house with a huge mural that says PLAY and it looks very nice. And it's a short name that fits the design motif. In his February 1999 update, Moby adds that "There are some other more esoteric reasons", but he has yet to elaborate on them.
So what does it sound like? "The album is good, if I dare say so myself," Moby says. "Much more down tempo than previous stuff. Why this is I don't know. It just sort of ended up that way." Fans and critics alike are giving it high praise. In fact, Spin magazine has chosen it as one of the top records of the 1990s!
