I actually sat down to do this opinion knowing that I do like this album, it is very clever.Visually I think this guy has amazing ideas..saw him on the Brits with all the people with blue faces AMAZING! However as I read through my comments I seem to be very picky! Guess that’s what happens when you get used to marking compositions. So read on and let me know if I have been over critical with these 18 tracks. Just my opinion you understand!! So read on Macduff!….
Track 1 -"Honey" Use of a vocal sample, simple driving piano rhythmic chords, slide playing on guitar to add some melodic interest, sounds like sampled drum rhythms as well, more like putting a jigsaw together rather than creating an original composition
Track 2 - "I`m gonna find my baby" Again the use of a sampled vocal, added acoustic guitar chords, gradually this track thickens in texture as the vocal gradually drifts further back into the mix, Added string chords, female vocal (yeah, yeah), slide guitar, nicely Southern America beer commercial style. Where does this track go? No where fast again
this is a jigsaw that has been put together. Although the track is quite catchy it is so simple it is painful!
Track 3 - "Porcelain" Reversed sample this time..ooh what a novel idea!! Lovely piano floating on top of this. Ah ha!!We now actually have some original vocal lines added by the man himself. I like this track it has a gentle, drifting feel as well as some nice effects added to the vocals.
Track 4 - "Why does my heart?" Good question! Nice sample again with an original piano riff. Again this is incredibly simple musically, yet it works. Strings, piano, drums added again to the sampled vocal line. This track relies heavily again on the added piano and string texture to give it depth. You could hardly say this man is a lyrical genius but he`s very clever at using lots of other peoples ideas…good job he doesn`t write for ciao!! Wouldn`t he be accused of cheating?!!!
Track 5 - "South side" Original vocal material and a pseudo african drum pattern ,Slide guitar a BIG feature this time..bit repetative not one of the stronger tracks. Dare I mention the guitar solo…Ooh this is a bit "rough" doesn`t even sound like its in the right key!!or am I just being over critical
Track 6 "Rushing" Mellow, mellow. Nice contrast to the previous track. Simple female vocal, strings and piano again. Floating gently lovely arpeggio figure on the piano moves the melodic line forward whilst not introducing new harmonic ideas…CLEVER!!
Track 7- "Body rock" Is this a really bad attempt at some sort of RAP/HIP HOP idea…I don`t know Nice use of wah guitar but again rather a lack of direction . Seems very familiar as well ..Best bit..piano break! Oh and its end!!
Track 8 _ "Natural Blues" OOH lordie, lordie I`ve heard this try to be done live…it doesn`t WORK! The sample has got such a rare quality how can you copy this? The sample is the strength of this track but again the added elements hold the track together..
Track 9 "Machete" I won`t if you don`t mind… awful
Track 10 "7" What?? Was he checking to see if his guitar was in tune and forgot record was pressed???
Track 11 "Run on" Wonderful sample!! Have you actually listened to the lyrics??? "Some people go to church to get a date with the neighbours wife!!!" Not a lot added here…drum beat and the odd bit of piano. Oh and that slide guitar again!
Track 12 "Down slow" VERY Portishead…don`t you think????
Track 13 "If things were perfect" Bass line intro…scratchin` record, samples again!! But original "vocals" or rather speech. Nice sentiment though…moving along!
Track 14 - "Ever loving"
Very nice acoustic guitar! Simple but melodic. Lots of "Mmmmming"…then add piano, drums and another guitar re-enforcing the first! Minor key…just in case you wanted to know! That`s why it sounds melancholy. Nice drop back at the end as well.
Track 15- "Inside"
Undulating chords and nice synth sounds bit like a crying seagull. Drum beat and it takes nearly 2 minutes before a piano melody line is added. Again this is a very floaty, drifty tune!
Track 16 " Flute, guitar and String" Acoustic guitar with "flute"…erm no! Flute sound yes…but certainly not a real one . I know I play one. Simple folky tune.
Track 17- "The sky is broken"
Drum beat…speaking again! Nice thoughts though."The sky turns black" "There`s nothing left here for me"…oooh now I feel so cheerful! Gosh aren`t I sarcastic
Track 18 - "My weakness"
Picture those Hawaiian people welcoming you in to shore…actually again clever use of a reverse sample!Nice and drifty again..peaceful. Relax and feel warm!!
In conclusion then, very clever album, certainly one of the more innovative in recent years. Give it a listen if you haven`t already and if you have…am I right??

Not a bad review but it rests on the idea that sampling = 'cheating', which is completely unjustified.

i love this album aswell and read your op to see what others thought. Your views on many tracks coincided with mine in a few cases (most definatly the portishead one!) and it was a joy to read - i love ops that show the personality of the writer and i do try to covey that in mine just as you do. Thanks for an enjoyable read.
