Many people think that Depeche Mode are simply enjoying a comeback but the truth is they've never been away. The band went through turbulent times in the 1990s following the departure of Alan Wilder and Dave Gahan's drug addiction and subsequent rehabilitation, but have continued to make better and better music throughout their 25-year career. Playing the Angel successfull combines the band's synth-pop roots with guitar/drum rock beats to produce the strongest Depeche Mode album since 1994's Songs of Faith and Devotion and many of the tracks seem reassuringly familiar on first hearing. The opening grinding screech of A Pain That I'm Used To immediately makes you sit up and take notice; John The Revelator is a rocked-up gospel number reminiscent of Personal Jesus; Lilian is in equal parts romantic, melancholy and accusing; I Want It All is a brooding introspective Gahan composition, sung with touching humility. The album as a whole is darkly captivating and destined to become a DM classic.
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
Sorry for the low rating, but while this might be helpful to a big 'Mode fan (who'll probably have bought it anyway). I'm not going to make my buying decision on how many songs Dave's written... Are they any good? What does the album sound like? You describe them as a rock group. Have they left the synths behind? Ben

Advantages: More memorable songs than any other Depeche Mode album since Violator Disadvantages: Would have been improved by dropping one or two weaker tracks
