Advantages: Great sounding instrument at a real bargain price Disadvantages: only comes with one reed and the sling supplied is a bit thin.
'hardness' 1 being the softest and easiest to blow and 5 being the hardest and loudest. Believe me, it is loud enough with a 2.5. I bought three 1.5 reeds, which for a beginner are easier to control.
To play the sax you need to support it on a sling, you don't want to be supporting it with your hands and trying to play at the same time. The sling supplied with the sax is basic and can be a bit uncomfortable, after a few days I treated myself to a padded sling which means that I can play comfortably in the nude. Now there's a picture for you.
Enough of the descriptive stuff, what's it like?
Well, the finish is to a high standard, after a thorough search I could find no blemishes, scratches or finishing faults. There is a floral motif punched into the bell and all the home finger position keys are marked with a pearloid disk. The top ...
Advantages: Incredible tone, easy to play, good intonation - everything you want in a sax! Disadvantages: It's quite pricey - around £2600+
This is without a doubt the nicest alto saxophone that I have ever played, and I have played almost all of the leading saxes, (including 2 Mark VI's, Serie II, Serie III, Keilwerth SX90R, yamaha customs, professional yanagisawas etc.)
This saxophone is my perfect saxophone, and if I could afford one then I would most definitely trade up my Serie II for one! This sax is basically a mark VI, but improved! It has the same classic tone of a mark VI, but it is easier to play, with improved intonation, and also the keys are more responsive and better designed.
This sax is finished in dark lacquer, to try and mimic a vintage look, and it looks spectacular. Selmer have also recently started making a version in an antique matt finish and not engraved, which I don't like as much, but it still looks impressive and sounds great.
I would ...
Advantages: Fairly Cheap and easy to play - a great first soprano Disadvantages: Intonation is slightly "dodgey", especially on the high notes, and you don't get the depth of tone or quality of sound that you would get from a more expensive sax (eg a Selmer). Supplied in a stupidly large case!
sax in a hard case with a carrying handle which is stupidly large - its almost the size of an alto case!! The only advantage of this is that I can fit my alto stand, soprano stand, clarinet stand, and a music stand in the case, as well as the cleaning equipment supplied with the sax (a standard pull-through and polisher.)
One of the other problems I've encountered with this sax is that the bottom C# key often sticks (although G# which is normally a problem is fine!) This may only happen on my sax however, and it seems ok if you put a good dose of "pad dope" or "gig dust" on it every so often. ...
