Released in 1997, 'Polythene' remains to be my favourite Feeder album right to this very day. From start to finish this album is absolutely excellent, always the music is packed full of energy and never is the sound created here anything short of exceptional. Feeder is a Welsh rock band that has been going now since 1992, 'Polythene' was the bands first full length studio album and comes complete with thirteen tracks totalling over 51 minutes of music. So many of the tracks impress hugely here, Feeder's debut album is a highly impressive one and certainly the music has plenty to offer.
Starting with 'Polythene Girl', immediately the album grabs you and not once does the sound created here fail to impress. The drumbeats are powerful throughout, the guitar riffs are absolutely excellent, and the vocal performance of Grant Nicholas never fails to make me smile. The album is incredibly well structured, the progression of the album is flawless and every element of the music here shines through strongly. 'Polythene Girl' has such an excellent chorus, right away the music makes an impact and always this piece of music is supremely strong. The power of the guitars truly is phenomenal here; this coupled with the quality of the vocals is without doubt what makes this track so strong. It's a hugely impressive opening track for the album, as Feeder progress through the rest of this release the music continues to shine and never is there a dull moment.
'Cement' is another strong track from this album, an impressive piece of music in all respects and one that is of course a highly powerful construction of sound. The lyrics are excellent here, well sung out by Grant Nicholas and ever impressively presented in the overall musical creation here. The drumbeats always have plenty to offer here, the guitar riffs are fantastic, and the bass lines also sound supreme. The track is just over three minutes in length and what a fine three minutes of music it is too. 'High' follows straight on from 'Cement' on this album, another excellent track and quite possibly my favourite from this album in fact. The lyrical presentation is powerful here, the guitars offer much to the music and the drumbeats also help progress the music here strongly. It is vocally where 'High' impresses the most I feel, the vocals are absolutely excellent in this track; so full of power and passion, the lines are sung out with real bite. The track is incredibly well put across by the band here, 'High' truly is a moving piece of music and to see the band play the track live is to hear this one at its very best.
With 'Crash' the power of the music of Feeder comes firing through once more, again the lyrics are excellent and the vocal performance is as ever exceptional. The track is raw, the music is passionate and the sound created is strong. The instrumental work is absolutely excellent, the way that the instrumental elements of the music combine together here with the vocal performance is fantastic and certainly this provides for a hugely entertaining listening experience. 'Radiation' is next up on the album, once more there is a great energy that runs through the music and always the sound is strong. The drumbeats are quite pleasantly put across here for the most part, the track has surges of power however and it is then that the music comes across most impressively.
'Stereo World' is another from this album that is a highly powerful creation of music. It is the guitars here that possess the most power and always the sound put across by the band is excellent here. Grant Nicholas is the Feeder guitarist, not only does his voice sound strong throughout this album but his guitar offerings to music also are excellent. 'Tangerine' is another track from this album where I feel that the guitar riffs are particularly well put across in the music, it's another heavy number and some excellent distorted guitar sounds can here be heard.
'20th Century Trip' is the track that is given the tough task of bringing this album to a close, I have to say that it does a good job however as this really is an excellent end to the album. 'Polythene' begins on a high and finishes on one also, '20th Century Trip' is a slow paced two minute offering that brings the album to a nice comfortable close. After such a heavy album of music it's nice to hear it all unwind at the very end, the track is well put across by Feeder here and although the pace has been slowed the quality certainly hasn't been lessened. A minimal approach to music is taken here, there's not much going on within the sound but the music that is put across most certainly is excellent. Some soothing guitar sounds are put across in the music here, the track is hugely atmospheric and always the instrumental presence of the music possesses a greatly beauteous quality.
'Polythene' is an absolutely excellent album of music, the sound created always has plenty to offer to the listener and not one of the thirteen tracks included here disappoint. 'High' is I feel the main highlight of this album, it's such a strong construction of music but then again many of the tracks included here are brilliant. So many of the tracks on this 'Polythene' album shine, always the guitar sounds created are full of energy and never is the vocal performance of Grant Nicholas anything but passionate. 'Polythene' is in my opinion the best album that Feeder has ever released, it's an incredibly strong album of music and included here are thirteen absolutely exceptional musical creations. For those that have ever heard and liked a Feeder track then I highly recommend giving 'Polythene' a listen, it's an extremely raw album of music and one that is both instrumentally and vocally impressive.
Advantages: Price, some brilliant tracks, typical Feeder, variety of sounds, two tracks from Swim Disadvantages: Presentation of the enhanced section, the odd weak link
...is Feeder’s finest album.
Polythene is the band’s first full album, before Polythene, they released a 2 track EP, the Two Colours EP (which is very rare but can be found on Ebay), and Swim, a mini album (which has literally “Resurfaced”), then Polythene was released in 1997 with two tracks or so from Swim. Feeder then moved on to the brilliant Yesterday Went Too Soon album and then the current Echo Park album.
Apart from ... ...natural to want to add Polythene to the collection, especially after hearing a few good songs from this album off what was Napster and IRC.
>>About The Polythene CD
Imagine my surprise when I saw this available at Virgin megastore for £5! (this was Jun/Jul 2001) There are 2 versions of this CD, this was originally just a plain CD with 13 tracks, but soon after, that was deleted and made way for the “enhanced version” which features ...

* Polythene Girl *
Opening up with some backwards guitars and a little synth riff the light hearted intro’s nice and cheerful and pretty good. The chorus is fairly standard grungy rock and so not bad but not particularly grabbing. However there’s an anger filled middle section that really stands out. Overall the song doesn’t initially grab you but is a bit of a grower.
* My Perfect Day *
A sad tinge of summer to this ... ...keen on the lyrics to Polythene Girl but these are better – not mind blowing, not Art Alexakis – but better.
* High * (Not present on first review)
If Travis ever made an interesting song (Miaow!) then I’d imagine it would sound similar to the verse to this song, while the verse goes more U2 but about drugs. Nothing particularly wrong with the song but it’s not particularly memorable. Wouldn’t turn it on, wouldn’t ...

1. Polythene Girl
A good start to the album, ‘Polythene Girl’ is a great song, with a fast and lively chorus. It is not my favourite track, the verses seem to get lost, but there is a good guitar playing throughout and the chorus makes an OK song good. “Polythene, Polythene Girl,
Wrap me up in a cellophane world, Polythene, Polythene Girl,
Breaking the seal, never though I would”
2. Perfect Day
Another ... ...a heavier, rockier sound to it than the first track with louder signing and guitars again very prominent. A great song in all respects. “But sometimes I feel it, You know how it is, You wake up in the morning everything fits,
I’m still hoping tomorrow feels like this,
My perfect day.” 3. Cement
Another strong song, with a rock feel to it again. Not as good or clearer chorus as the first two tracks, but is more of a lyrically ...

Polythene Girl
The album start off in quite a rocky mood, a kind of love song I guess – ‘Polythene, polythene girl/ Wrap me up in a cellophane world’ – but already with darker elements so typical - ‘Addicted to you/ ...Suffocate, elevate’.
My Perfect Day
Another rocker, this time pretty feel good – ‘You wake up in the morning and everything fits/ I’m still ... ...The first ‘slowy’ of the album. Seems to be about obsession with an ex-girlfriend, but again moving whilst being too humorous to be depressing.
High
The ‘hit single’ which was added to the album as a CD-ROM video too. It’s possibly the softest here, and quite uplifting despite that, which perhaps accounts for commercial success. Not bad, but not one of my favourites I have to admit.
Crash
A slightly rockier track ...

Advantages: video of high and 'Descend' Disadvantages: some weak links
This Feeder’s debut album and was released in 1997 on the echo label. This album has all you need from an Indie/Rock band with great catchy songs and also darker songs (which are my favourites). Obviously people would choose ‘High’ or ‘My perfect day’ as their favourite tracks as they were both singles. However my favourite track is ‘Descend’ this is classic dark rock song which echo’s of nirvana without trying too it’s just a class song. ‘Stereo ...

Reviews which might be of interest for "Polythene - Feeder"
Advantages: The first half of the album, stirring choruses Disadvantages: Some of the middle tracks let the album down.
From the lack of reviews for this album I can only conclude that this is the much overlooked forerunner to Feeder's more 'polished' recent offerings. This first full-length album after their EP Swim, Polythene is surely a must for any Feeder fan who has not yet got it in their collection.
At this point I think it is important to clarrify the meaning of the title. It is not an intimation that Feeder have declined. No, it merely reflects how much more angst ridden Grant et al appeared to be in their early days. Much of this album is quite dark (you only need to look at the track titles) but don't worry that's not to say you will fall yourself into a pit of despair upon listening to them!
I have seen Feeder live 7 times and can testify that many of Feeder's greatest live tracks come from this album. High is probably the original ...
Advantages: Touching lyrics, beautiful melodies, haunting guitars Disadvantages: Lack of fast-paced songs might bore some, some unoriginality
What a surprising follow-up to the faux-metal Britrock posterings of "Polythene." Feeder managed pull a spectacular album from seemingly uninspiring influences.
Opening with the crashing guitar noise of "Anaesthetic," this album wants you to sit up and listen. Along the way we have such polished rock gems as "Insomnia" and the catchy "Hole in My Head," interspersed with more introspective moments like "Dry" and the sublime "Paperfaces."
The guitar parts have that familiar Britrock distortion sound, but tempered with a subtlety that was missing on previous releases. Bassist Taka Hirose takes a back seat, assuming more rythymic than melodic duties, but contributions can clearly be heard on the title track and "Tinsel Town." Drummer Jon Lee's exuberance shines through as always, driving the songs, and the drumming on "Tinsel Town ...
Advantages: Great sounding, and enjoyable album from start to finish Disadvantages: None
13 tracks of sheer genius! Echo Park really is the best Feeder album. There was so little recognition of the first two albums, the short 'Swim' and 'Polythene' released in 1997, that it's time the lads got a break, and here it is. The hit single 'Buck Rogers' and their latest offering 'Seven days in the sun' both feature, and are both stand out tracks. If you liked these then you really will love the album. From the heavier delights of 'Choke' and 'Bug', to the more mellow, five minute offering that is 'satellite news', the whole album is a well put together, well thought out piece of musical material that any band would be proud of.
Other tracks include a cleverly ill sounding 'under the weather' and 'Just a day', the fantastic end to what is a fantastic album. It really is that good, and I just can't help but recommend it ...
Feeder: Grant Nicholas (vocals, guitar); Taka Hirose (bass); Jon Lee (drums). Producers: Feeder, Chris Sheldon, Grant Nicholas, Brian Sperber. Engineers: Chris Sheldon, Brian Sperber, Matt Sime. Feeder scored a hit single in the mother country with the acoustic flavored "High" and are looking to carry that success over into the colonies with their debut album POLYTHENE. Their modus operandi is mixing classic power pop melodies with Smashing Pumpkins bombast (and a bit of Billy Corgan crooning). Singer/guitarist Grant Nicholas' specialty is the big chorus. Taking the cue from Cheap Trick, "Polythene Girl" and "Cement" have hooks big enough to catch Moby Dick, all surrounded by enough crunchy guitars to make Jimmy Page proud. And they aren't afraid to put the pedal to the metal on "Stereo World" and "Tangerine," which contain some of the heavier riffs of the '90s. Finally, a band that can fulfill the promise of the second British Invasion.
Album Reviews
Magnet (3-4/98, p.65) - "...POLYTHENE, expertly pairs an unerring melodicism worthy of a less-British London Suede with a hard-rock gusto that would raise eyebrows on banging heads..."
