If you enjoyed the Big Band week of the TV show or saw the concert and enjoyed the second half, ... ...cover is quite moody, the Pop Idol logo in the middle. (The official Pop Idol condoms, sanitary towels and toilet rolls are only a matter of time.) There are black and white photos of the final ten around the sides. Will as an axe murderer. Rosie as a prostitute. Gareth wistfully smiling in the corner, desperately trying to prove he IS going out with Hayley and hasn’t really got the hots for Will, oh no sirree.

If you enjoyed the Big Band week of the TV show or saw the concert and enjoyed the second half, this album is for you. If swing ain’t your thing, don’t bother.
Comparisons with Robbie Williams’ Swing When You’re Winning album are bound to come up. I own both that album and this one, they’re both great. Robbie sings Mack The Knife better than Gareth, Will beats Robbie hands down on Beyond The Sea.

But enough of this banter. On with the music. Yes, indeed. Let’s face the music and dance.
Picture our kitchen any morning. We own two copies of this album and one always seems to be on downstairs. My ten year old son will be swaying and tapping along, not forgetting to fast forward Gareth. My eleven year old daughter nods serenely, tutting at me singing loudly. My eight year old and six year olds know all the words to these songs from even before I was born (!), singing and dancing, trying not to choke on their toast. This one is indeed a toe-tapping body-swaying finger-clicking experience.
The first track is the best one on the album, but I would say that, because it’s Will. But it is. In fact, buy the album, stick track one on repeat and you’ll be quite happy. Beyond The Sea is a great song, Will’s rendition is just perfect. I’ve heard him sing this live and he is just wonderful. Plus anything that can get my six year old singing along to this kind of music must be good! (Well, it’s better than the Tweenies!)
The next track is my second favourite – Get Happy by Zoë Birkett. I loved the original, but this is a great version too. You can see the video to this on The Box and similar music channels. It is supposed to be coming out as a single soon. For a sixteen year old, she has a belter of a voice and this suits the track perfectly.
Darius Danesh. Remember him? Bad hair, bad attitude, bad Britney? Yes, that was last year. Now he’s shaved, had his hair cut and has come back as a sex god. Oh yes, purr to me, baby.
He finished 3rd in the Pop Idol final, but has only one track on the album, compared to Zoe’s three! (She came 4th.) Of course, BMG have signed up Will, Gareth and Zoë, but not Darius. The national tour this October is Will, Gareth and Zoë. Let’s hope this means Darius will have more control over his career than Simon Cowell’s puppets seem to.
Anyway, Darius croons Let There Be Love in that tingling, smooth, silken tones of his. Rarrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
Gareth Gates. Hmm. Well, the next track is my favourite Gareth song – Mack the Knife. I enjoy his version of it, even though it’s nowhere near the best version I’ve heard. The funniest thing is that he sings this with such bounce, verve and enthusiasm that you feel sure it must be a song about fluffy kittens, birthday parties and lottery wins. I was convinced Robbie’s version was about blood, guts and murder. Oh well. Gareth’s version is definitely Pulp Fiction for the under-fives.
Slowing things down, we now have Jessica Garlick, our Eurovision Song Contest entry this year. Oh, stop sniggering in the back! She has a beautiful voice and Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye is one of my favourite songs. I know this, because I remember singing it very loudly at the Student Union in 1988, after several double vodkas. I still can’t hit the notes now, even though I’m sober. (Hic.) But Jessica does it with style and class.
Aaron Bayley is up next, he’s the cheeky chappie Geordie train driver. Thankfully, he manages to sing I Get A Kick Out Of You, without resorting to becoming Elvis. Phew. This song worked much better in the concert, as he has a great personality and charisma, which doesn’t come across so well on CD. Not bad though, worth a listen.
Zoe’s back next. Gosh, that must be a whole four tracks we’ve had without her on! This one – I’ve Got You Under My Skin - was her weakest in the concert and I’m not convinced with this version either. When she was unable to perform a couple of the shows, Darius sang this one instead and I think his version should have been on the album.
Swiftly moving on, we have Hayley. She has a great voice, but she lacks something. I have said before that she just isn’t memorable enough. The same thing happens here. She sings That Ole Devil Called Love really well, but by the next track, you’ve forgotten it. The kids often get Jessica and Hayley mixed up too, as their voices sound similar on the CD and they both sing slow songs.
Back to Will for track nine, singing I Won’t Dance. I wasn’t keen on this one at the concert, but it grows on you. I hadn’t heard this before, when all the other songs were familiar to me, so that’s probably why. This track still isn’t a favourite – it still sounds like he says “messy” beaucoup! - but it’s worth a listen, just for Will’s unique voice… tingle tingle…
Korben was a complete revelation in the concert, he’s a real star and was a highlight. He sings Night and Day here, with a lovely individual style and his personality shows through. We like this one. He has a lovely texture and quality to his voice.
Rosie Ribbons has a name that sounds as though she should be famous. However, she declined the offer of a career in soft porn <grin> and wants to be a singer. Her version of Cheek To Cheek is pretty good. Well, it’s not a Mariah Carey song, so it starts off with an advantage, I suppose.
Okay, you can turn the CD off now and go back to track one. What do you mean, there are two more tracks left. Yes, I know, but they’re awful. Oh alright then, for the completist’s sake, I’ll review them.
Laura Doherty (the over-excitable Irish one, who never shuts up) sings They Can’t Take That Away From Me. NB : The use of the word ‘sings’ in that sentence was meant in the loosest possible sense. But at least you don’t have to look at her and can hit the ‘skip’ button. Or even programme your CD player to randomly play the tracks. Just make sure you don’t put numbers 12 or 13 into it.
Number thirteen. Unlucky for some. Gareth <whisper whisper> duetting with Zoë <BIG voice>. Now, can you see the problem here? It’s called Oh Look At Me Now. I don’t think I’ll bother. Time to put the kettle on.
My daughter got a Furby for her birthday the other day and the kids were trying to teach it English by sitting it in front of the CD player. They played this album and when it got to Gareth, my son fast-forwarded it. He said “You don’t want the Furby learning THAT!” ;-)

Incidentally, the Pop Idol concert is on TV this weekend, so if you like the second half, buy this album! (ITV1, Saturday, 5:40-7:10pm)
Advantages: Great if you are into Pop Idol or swing type music Disadvantages: Some of the tracks could be better or more Darius!
Having watched Pop Idol - the concert Saturday night and I found myself watching it again this morning, so I was in a Pop Idol mood when I entered the Virgin Record shop this lunch time. Whilst in the record shop I realised that we were infact listening to the Pop Idol Album that I wanted to buy.
I persuaded my hubby to buy it only because it is my birthday next Sunday and he hasn't bought me anything yet. Its called "Big Band" because thats the ... ...she likes Will Young "The pop idol" but I prefer Darius Danesh and he sings a gorgeous version of Let there be love this track is the third one, to get to it I had to listen to Will sing the first of his two Beyond the sea, the second one being I won't dance, and Zoe Birkett sing Get Happy. I didn't think that I would like or know all the songs on this album but I have heard them all before sung by different artists, of course. Will for those people ...

Advantages: Fantastic songs and a great orchestra Disadvantages: Some of the 'Idols' ae obviously unused to this sort of music
...album.
I don't think Pop Idol needs any introduction, even if, like me, you were one of the three people who didn't actually watch it. This is the first album spun out of the project - I'm told the big band round was one of the most popular. It features ten bright young things singing thirteen bright old songs, some of (in my opinion, of course, though I'm not alone) the best songs ever written:
Let There Be Love
Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye
I've ... ...of the multitude obsessed with Pop Idol, for a chance to hear your favourites again
- you love big band music. A new album featuring these songs should definitely be supported, and if nothing else the orchestra (The Big Blue) is great
- you think this sort of music isn't your thing. Trust me, you'll love it. Great lyrics, hummable tunes and some good performances. At least listen to a track or two in the store if you get the chance; you really ...

...it, you were hooked by Pop Idol, weren't you? And why not? There's nothing to be ashamed of, it was a great series packed full of very talented singers (and some not so talented). On this album you'll find thirteen of these super smooth classics from goodness knows how long ago. The album starts off strong with the deserved winner Will Young singing "Beyond The Sea", originally by Bobby Darin. He can sing and he makes every song he sings different ... ...Zoe Birkett (who has three tracks on the album, more than Will and Gareth), and it's probably the strongest song on the whole album. The infamous Darius Danesh comes next with "Let There Be Love", originally sung by Nat King Cole. Love him or hate him, he has a really distinctive voice and does the song as well as Nat King Cole did (according to Pete Waterman anyway). He has a good chance of making a long career for himself because his core audience ...

...inches in the press the Pop Idols and Simon Cowell began their latest money-making venture on Moday with the release of the first album, Pop Idol The Big Band Album. The choice of album I suppose was fairly obvious after the success Robbie Williams enjoyed recently with his Swing When You're Winning album. However the title does worry me slightly, I mean is the public supposed to also lap up, "Pop Idol The Abba Album" and "Pop Idol The Judges Choice ... ...all the negative publicity which Pop Idol has generated concerning the treatment of the eventual winner Will Young and it's bias towards the runner-up Gareth Gates, how will the public react to this latest venture? Again the sales to this album will give the answer to this question too. I for one believe that we will see this album chart at number one and probably stay there for several weeks selling several squillion copies in the process and making ...
