Advantages: Every songs a winner Disadvantages: It needed to last longer
How many people can say they've listened to an album where every song on it is truely amazing! Well ner ner ner nern er! i can this is sheer brilliance. I bought this album after listening to it at a friends house and basically went straight out and bought it. Everysong was just amazing. Undenied is my favourite where she excels herself. Her voice, the lyrics just moved me literally. I mean one minute I'm sat on one side of the room and the next ... ...power of her voice. Well anyone who is into this true intense, beautiful form of dance music please do yourself a favour and be a liquor saver - go out and buy it! Spend your money on something more worthwhile than booze like I did. Well I was muchos imprestos with this album and I don't half talk some bull rush but it's because I truely am excited through this album. Advantages: Everything Portishead Disadvantages: Not for Mr and Mrs Average
...Portishead - the album by Portishead. This is not your typical mainstream band or music. I'm sure they fit into some category but what it is I don't really know. I have all their albums but this was the first one I bought, probably having been influenced to buy it by hearing the single - All Mine.
The unmistakable voice of Beth Gibbons is enchanting and very ethereal. She is accompanied by an array of drum beats, horns and strings, multiple 'odd' devices that produce singularly unique noises, scratching and sampling or whatever the hell it is called and some deep, haunting lyrics.
I saw them live at T in the Park. It was a wet, miserably smelly evening at the back of a big tent. I was somewhere near the front by the end of the second song and revelling in their live set which was breathtaking.
This album is blessed with many beautiful...

Advantages: No problems on 2nd album - another masterpiece Disadvantages: May not appeal to all those that bought 'Dummy'
...Darker and more challenging than its predecessor, Portishead's 2nd album is likely to challenge many of the fans that bought 'Dummy'. Nevertheless, the band do stick to the formula of scratchings, samples and trip-hop beats all immersed against Beth Gibbons' confrontational vocals.
Whilst not as bleak in outlook as their first album, several tracks do continue in the same mood as 'Dummy' and "Undenied" is clearly the 'Roads' of this album. Many of the songs though are far harsher than those of previous material, exemplified by "Over" and "Seven Months".
The closing track - "Western Eyes" - based solely around a few piano chords, ends with the lyric sample: "this mess we're in"...a suggestion for collective sadness and not self pity?
In the end, this is a superb follow up which highlights a band who are not only in control...

Advantages: Brilliant chill-out album Disadvantages: Not good to get a party kicking
...There’s no better music to relax to than the haunting melodies and angelic singing of Portishead – as Aldous Huxly once said ‘Music is the only art for which can totally intoxicate you and move you to another level’ this is defiantly true of Portishead, unlike many similar bands like Radiohead or No Doubt, Portishead use a full orchestra when performing there songs plus the classic acoustic guitar and emotive singing plus a DJ scratching and sampling on the decks. The really amazing thing is that Portishead manage to tie in all the different musicals styles to create a truly moving piece to match anything by Mozart, Radiohead or Apex Twin.
The twisted soundscapes and haunting lyrics make this a definitive chill out album...
