Captain Corelli's Mandolin - A good love story

It is adapted from a book written by Louis De Bernieres and although i have not read it i did find this film to be very good. I picked this up thinking it would just be a war film but was very surprised when i found out it was romance but that did not put me off. As Nicholas Cage was in the lead role this played a part in my thinking it would be a big gun blazing type of war movie. Review of Captain Corelli's Mandolin (DVD)

Sense and Sensibility plus extra features = great item

Advantages: What extras there are complement the film well
Disadvantages: Might only appeal to a specific audience, few extra features

to say more, although the male take on the film is still insightful (particularly since Emma Thompson says she was worried it would be marketed and perceived as a "girly film") - in my opinion, James Schamus had a less serious approach to the film than Ang Lee, who seemed more reverent, respect and caring about his production. The female commentary, incidentally, gives the impression that there is little music in the film but what there is (admittedly the soundtrack CD lengthened some tracks and included music that was written but not added to the final cut) is appropriate to the mood, time period and story represented in the film. As a period film and costume enthusiast, I love this DVD but I'm not sure it has universal appeal - I can't imagine a group of teenage boys sitting down to it of their own free will, but who knows? A Sensible Film to Watch

Advantages: Excellent acting, wonderful storyline
Disadvantages: Children may be unable to follow

I've been off work for the past week, quite ill from a spider bite. Although I passed away much of the time resting/sleeping, I've had periods where I felt the need to be entertained. On Thursday, I pulled one of all-time favorite films, Sense and Sensibility, off the shelf and turned on my trusty VCR. This has to be at least the fifth or sixth time that I watched this film since I purchased just a little over a year ago. I always enjoy it and find it particularly appealing when I'm in a bit of a serious or comtemplative mood. Sense and Sensibility boasts and excellent cast that includes Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Kate Winslet, and Alan Rickman. Emma Thompson portrays the eldest and most "sensible" sister, Elinor.
