Oh my f**king God! I got this album 2 years ago, and it still kicks ass to this very day! If you’ve ever heard about Monster Magnet, and were looking for a good entry point, I can recommend this album wholeheartedly. I recently saw them live, and all I could think was “this is like Spinal Tap, but in a good way!”

If you’ve ever heard about Monster Magnet, and were looking for a good entry point, I can recommend this album wholeheartedly. I recently saw them live, and all I could think was “this is like Spinal Tap, but in a good way!”
The album kicks off this ‘Crop Circle’; a spooky psychedelic opening giving way to a cataclysmic rock song that would make any band in existence proud to own it. And this is only track one! Track two is the titular ‘Powertrip’, a rock anthem in anybody’s book. From there, the quality never wavers.
This album is like the soundtrack to ‘Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas’ From dizzying highs to stomach-churning lows (Check out the Doors-esque ‘See You In Hell’, you’ll see what I mean.) Irony is left at the door, as vocalist Dave Wyndorf utters more ‘yeah, baby, yeah’s than an army of Austin Powers.
However, and this is the important point, at no time does this matter. This is a truly great rock album, like they used to make. Sexy without every being sleazy, decadent without being bloated, it walks a fine line between sublime and ridiculous, and never, ever, falls. That is it’s true marvel.
Advantages: It rocks, A couple of huge tunes Disadvantages: It doesn't trip out, It's over produced, It's not effortless
Having been a massive Monster Magnet fan since they released the drug mammoth that was 25...Tab in 1993 I have to say that I was totally disillusioned by this album. It would appear that the band have all gone into detox to sort out their drug habits and have come out having lost all sense of irony. As a result, compared to albums such as Spine of God, this album sounds to deliberate and blatant. The whole insane magic of Monster Magnet used to be ... ...the studio one day, got totally wasted and just played songs until they fell over. This album sounds like it was never actually played but was constructed in a computer somewhere instead. This just doesn't sound effortless anymore. They even seem to have a huge sample bank of screams and yelps from vocalist Dave Wyndorf which they drop in every now and then, obvously he just couldn't be bothered to do it live. The thing that really pisses me of about ...

Album Notes
Monster Magnet: Dave Wyndorf (vocals, guitar); Ed Mundel (guitar); Joe Calandria (bass); Jon Kleiman (drums). Additional personnel: Phil Caivano, John Flannery, Matt Hyde (guitar); Scott Garret (drums). Following 1995's DOPES TO INFINITY, which contained the successful single "Negasonic Teenage Warhead", Monster Magnet is back with a vengeance. POWERTRIP is a phat, funky, heavy, danceable record that assaults the senses. These guys rock, but with a flair and excitement that incorporates some other musical styles as well. Monster Magnet are a metal band for the 90's--plenty of thunderous riffage, accented by various other elements thrown into the mix. While POWERTRIP's first two tracks, "Crop Circle" and the title cut, are straight ahead heavy tunes, "Space Lord" ventures into some funky territory. With an acoustic intro, the track is reminiscent of early Red Hot Chilli Peppers or Mindfunk. "Temple Of Your Dreams" has a great dance groove and "19 Witches" has a Pulp Fictionish surf guitar feel to it. "See You In Hell" is straightforward rock with some keyboards thrown in, while "Tractor" goes the punk route. POWERTRIP, while definitely a heavy album, provides enough different styles to appeal to fans of any of the above mentioned genres. All in all, Monster Magnet goes outside the boundaries of traditional metal to produce a record of groove-laden depth.
Album Reviews
CMJ (1/11/99, pp.7-8) - "...13 tracks of pounding hard rock glory...sounding a battle cry that's as evil as Black Sabbath, as dirty as the Stooges, and as righteous as the MC5's 'Kick Out the Jams.' A complete juggernaut..." Entertainment Weekly (7/10/98, p.76) - "...Imagine FUN HOUSE-era Stooges on a sci-fi (or psilocybin?) kick. Wyndorf's lyrics may be absurd comic-book claptrap...but POWERTRIP's music is monstrously mind-bending." - Rating: A-
