Oh my f**king God! I got this album 2 years ago, and it still kicks ass to this very day! If you’ve ever heard about Monster Magnet, and were looking for a good entry point, I can recommend this album wholeheartedly. I recently saw them live, and all I could think was “this is like Spinal Tap, but in a good way!”
The album kicks off this ‘Crop Circle’; a spooky psychedelic opening giving way to a cataclysmic rock song that would make any band in existence proud to own it. And this is only track one! Track two is the titular ‘Powertrip’, a rock anthem in anybody’s book. From there, the quality never wavers.
This album is like the soundtrack to ‘Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas’ From dizzying highs to stomach-churning lows (Check out the Doors-esque ‘See You In Hell’, you’ll see what I mean.) Irony is left at the door, as vocalist Dave Wyndorf utters more ‘yeah, baby, yeah’s than an army of Austin Powers.
However, and this is the important point, at no time does this matter. This is a truly great rock album, like they used to make. Sexy without every being sleazy, decadent without being bloated, it walks a fine line between sublime and ridiculous, and never, ever, falls. That is it’s true marvel.
