Advantages: Fantastic display of Jazz composition Disadvantages: Jazz isn't for everyone
CharlesMingus - In a Soulful Mood.
CharlesMingus, also known as "The angry man of Jazz", is a fantastic jazz bassist and composer. He was born in 1922 in Arizona and picked up the Double Bass in high school. He had previously learnt to play the cello and trombone so many of his cello skills were converted to double bass. In his early years he was composing incredibly advanced jazz pieces, some of which to be recorded later on.
Over his career Mingus recorded in excess of 70 records with various musicians passing through his often unconventional bands. He tended to focus on the personality, as well as the ability, of a musician to see how he would fit into the band. He ran a jazz workshop that included around 8 members and shaped musicians into unconventional ways that explored their improvisational talents. Pieces ...
Advantages: Free entrance, beutifully built, historic attraction Disadvantages: Can get very busy
Charles Bridge is probably one of Pragues most recognised landmarks. For many years, Charles Bridge was the only way to cross the River Vltava that flows through the middle of the City. Nowadays there are many bridges connecting Old Town Prague and the New Town but there is still something very special about the Charles Bridge that makes it stand out from all the others.
Charles Bridge is an old stone gothic bridge which is lined with numerous statues of saints. The bridge was built from sandstone blocks and was commissioned by Charles IV, after whom the bridge was named, in 1357. Today, the Charles Bridge can only be crossed on foot, but with it being a very popular attraction in Prague, it is literally crammed with crowds of people all day long. There is no fee for crossing the bridge but tourists are invited to walk up the tower ...
Advantages: Grand, atmospheric bedrooms and posh bathrooms Disadvantages: Disappointing breakfast, lack of facilities, distance from town centre.
I'd wanted to go to Prague for YEARS and finally got my wish in December 2008 when my boyfriend and I went over for three nights to get into the Christmas spirit with mulled wine and gingerbread. I'd thoroughly recommend the city for a short break, but this review is about our hotel.
We booked through lastminute.com, and it came down to a choice between the King Charles and a very modern plate-glass-and-red-Perspex type edifice that was only built in 2007. We decided to go with the King Charles as I thought it looked a little bit grand and Gothic and atmospheric and was more in-keeping with the 'feel' of Prague. I'm not one for all mod-cons. It was listed a four-star hotel but it was on offer so we paid only about £25 each per night.
When we received our confirmation email, the hotel reception also offered to come and collect us ...

Full title: Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus. Personnel: Charles Mingus (bass); Eric Dolphy (alto saxophone, bass clarinet); Ted Curson (trumpet); Dannie Richmond (drums). Recorded at Nola Penthouse Studio, New York, New York on October 20, 1960. Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff. Digitally remastered by Mark Tomase. This 1960 recording features Mingus with a quartet, a small ensemble in comparison to many of his other records. The circumstances were unique; this was to be Eric Dolphy and Ted Curson's last recording with the bassist after playing with him for many months (although this certainly wasn't to be Mingus and Dolphy's final artistic pairing). This personnel crisis, rather than resulting in a stiff and stressed performance, produced one of Mingus' finest albums. The songs here feature a fiery amalgam of blues, gospel, and folk with group improvisation. The band attempted to duplicate the feel of a club performance without the attendant hazards and sound problems; Mingus had the lights dimmed to simulate an evening gig, and he playfully banters to a non-existent audience. The version of "Original Faubus Fables" on this album is notable for the inclusion of its talking/singing sections condemning the racist governor of Georgia, which were excluded from a previously released version of the song.
