Advantages: Great First Album Disadvantages: Some Tracks A Little Dated
Frank Zappa spotted the Alice Cooper Group and funded this their first album in November 1968. It is an interesting album and contains many dark numbers which hinted at what was to come. Indeed Alices former mentor supported Alice Cooper many years later as the Prodigy eclipsed the Masters work.

Zappa only appeared briefly in the recording studio to help out on some of the tracks due to prior commitments.

The album cover uses a paininting by Ed Bearsley which has got nothing to do with either the band or what appears on the record but is more apparent to Frank Zappa strange train of though.

Advantages: Trippy experimental 60s album Disadvantages: Bad drumming!
Pretties for You was AliceCooper's first release in 1969 and anyone listening to it without being familiar with it would struggle to recognise it as AliceCooper. The work is psychedelic rock n roll and sounds like The Doors with more emphasis put on guitar work and mouth organ as opposed to keyboard.
This album was released at a time when the band were yet to have really dabbled with shock rock, when they were based in California playing to hippies and gays, signed to Frank Zappa's record label and were dressed "as barbie dolls" by another Zappa band The GTO's, an enterage of female groupies from the sunset strip.
The songs are trippy and fun, guitar work is fairly good, vocals are sound, drum sounds like someone tapping on a car steering wheel and the lyrics themselves seem to make little sense in the order they are written ...
Advantages: Good, early sound Disadvantages: Rough production
On the back of the slight breakthrough with Pretties for You, AliceCooper and original band set out to release their 2nd album - Easy Action, a 1970 album which wouldn't have the success that Pretties for You did. It still has an experimental and psychedelic sound to it, Alice's voice is gravelly, the lyrics are clever and unassuming. The titles of tracks like "Mr & Misdemeanor" are even wittily written. Some songs would go on to feature in much later concerts - particularly Refrigerator Heaven, which would later often be combined with Cold Ethyl in shows. Piano features quite a bit, the band play in more of a psychedelic rock style than anything heavier but their lyrics feature a dark side - examples:
Shoe Salesman:
I know a shoe salesman he's an acquaintance of mine
One day he showed me some marks on his arms in a line ...
Advantages: Still rocking, some good lyrics Disadvantages: A bit cheesy at times and some of the tracks are a bit poppy
Along Came A Spider is AliceCooper's 25th studio album, released some 39 years after his first album "Pretties for You", I'm a big AliceCooper fan and have every one of his albums and the fact that he experiments with different sounds occasionally means that they're not that good or are completely different to what you expect but most of them grown on you within time.
So far this millenium has been a bit of a mixed bags - whilst I thought it started off strong with the harder sounding Brutal Planet and Dragontown, The Eyes of AliceCooper was hit and miss and had one or two stinkers but also some good tracks as he aimed for a garagey sound, Dirty Diamonds on the other hand was a bit of a let down with a poppy sound and no stand out tracks. Along Came A Spider was not only well-received by critics but also seemingly the public ...
