The 1989 debut album from Nine Inch Nails was revolutionary due to its original use of traditional heavy instruments in combination with electronic sounds. The two different sounds had never been combined so smoothly (and it would be hard to find anything that has to this day). More importantly even than the groundbreaking sound was the fact that it had brilliant lyrics and the songs were filled with genuine emotion that can often touch the listener.
The main man behind the music is Trent Reznor. Other band members are more like contributors than anything else, with Trent being the song writer, producer, vocalist and player of many instruments! This method continued with all the following releases with the other band members mainly coming in to effect live.
The CD comprises of the following 10 tracks:
1. Head Like A Hole 2. Terrible Lie 3. Down In It 4. Sanctified 5. Something I Can Never Have 6. Kinda I Want To 7. Sin 8. That’s What I Get 9. The Only Time 10. Ringfinger
Songs like ‘Head Like A Hole’ and ‘Sin’ are Nine Inch Nails classics that are still live favourites. Those two along with ‘Down In It’ were the singles from this album. All three tracks are brilliant groundbreaking tracks that made ‘Industrial Metal’ a recognised genre. Each track sounds great and are pretty heavy too (although perhaps not as heavy as some songs from later albums).
Something I Can Never Have is possibly the most important track on the album. It is a powerful song with very sincere dark lyrics. It is not heavy at all and is almost dominated by Trent’s voice. The reason I say it is important is because it shows that Nine Inch Nails would not just be about heavy music. The music is genuinely emotional which means it is heavy when that is suitable or soft when that is a more powerful way of conveying the emotion.
The album is full of good tracks but a couple of other that I think stand out are ‘Terrible Lie’ and ‘That’s What I Get’. Both demonstrate that the music genuinely means everything to Trent Reznor. For this reason there are no weak tracks.
Because the emotions that are the basis of songs are painful ones the album is very dark, if you are listening to it with concentration you will be affected by it. To me that is a fantastic and rare thing, to others it might not be nice if you generally avoid darker music. For this reason and the fact that it does not sound like anything else I would not recommend this album to everyone I met. This is true of all Nine Inch Nails music. If you do not connect with the music then you might not be very keen on it but I believe that if it means something to you then you will LOVE it.
