Review of O Mio Babbino Caro: Famous Soprano Arias from Italian Opera - Various Composers by grafter123

Advantages: Beautiful music and vocals, classic tracks,
Disadvantages: Specialised taste.

...from Giacomo Puccini's opera Gianni Schicci. This opera was part of a trilogy of operas dating back to 1918 and was first performed at the Metropolitan opera in New York. This aria is a daughter pleading with her father and is a lovely piece of music. I have heard this performed many times, by many different voices and, although this version is not my favourite, I still love it. Qui la voce sua soave(Here the tender voice) From the 1835 The Puritans by Vincenzo Bellini. This opera is set in the English Civil War and this track basically is a lover imagining she hears her lovers voice. It is a light and frothy sort of aria. Si mi chiamano Mimi (They call me Mimi) Taken from Puccini's La Boheme which is generally thought to be one of the most romantic operas of all time and was first staged in 1896. Lucia, known to her friends as Mimi... Read review

A fiasco. Time will judge.
Review of Verdi: Traviata (La) by falstaff88

Advantages: Superb singing
Disadvantages: Hard to find

...When Verdi's immortal opera La Traviata premiered in March 1853 at the Fenice, Venice, it proved a disaster. Verdi was philosophical about the outcome. "Was it the singers' fault, or mine"? he wrote to his friend Emanuele Muzio. Perhaps there was good reason for the audience to pan the performance. Firstly, they objected to the modern costuming - the play on which the opera was based took place some 150 years earlier - but the costumes were contemporary. Then later, in Act 111, when Violetta was dying of consumption and was given merely a few hours to live, the audience erupted into an outburst of laughter. This was due to the fact that opening night prima donna, Signora Salvini-Donatelli, who was rather kindly referred to as 'troppo properosa' - or significantly overweight - did little to add real credibility to the tragedy... A great intro to classical music
Review of The Most Famous Opera Arias by operalover2000

Advantages: All good strong performances with some absolutely glorious
Disadvantages: Some of the arias do not show the singers at their best

...aria. His voice is warm and virile with plenty of attack for the high notes. Franco Corelli is more inclined to sing softly than Domingo and Pavarotti has a smoother voice but Domingo is very very good here Il barbière di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville), opera Una voce poco fà Composed by Gioachino Rossini Performed by London Philharmonia Orchestra with Anna Moffo Conducted by Sir Colin Davis > a really nice sparkling performance of this famous aria. Moffo's sweet soft highnotes make her Rosina a softer creation than say Callas or some mezzosopranos but it makes some of the things she says funnier - you have this sweet voiced woman being really calculating an strong-willed. The conducting is a little soft - more drive would be appreciated so it doesnt sound too sentimental. Lakmé, opera Ou va la jeune indoue? Composed by Leo... Read review
