Advantages: It's Prince Disadvantages: none what so ever!
...This was the album that shot Prince into the big time and into my heart all because of one of the century's most played songs ~ the excellent '1999', which is still as fresh as the day it was born.
This album is truly brilliant and showed the first real signs that Prince was going to become a megastar, the CD goes from the funky 'Delirious' to the sophisticated 'Something In The Water' and of course everybody knows 'Little Red Corvette.
'Lady Cab Driver' is one of his most gorgeous of songs, makes me go all weak at the knees, phew!
Prince shows a stunning display of raw talent in this album, not wallowing indulgence which he has been accused of doing. If you're listening to '1999' there is something about the 1980's that pops up every time, really experimental kind of funk and hip-hop.
But I reckon all of his songs are equally...

Advantages: Some classic tracks. Disadvantages: Too much filler.
...It's all too easy to forget that Prince was once considered to be one of the musical geniuses of his time. The 80s and early 90s were his to command, as he turned out songs of the calibre of Purple Rain, Little Red Corvette, and Raspberry Beret.
But for every Purple Rain on this album, there are three "Sexy M.F." or the ludicrous egotism of "Gett Off". Prince was good - but to stretch his hits over two discs was perhaps spreading the genius a little bit too thinly. There seems to be no pattern or order as to why which songs are on which disc, so the best solution might be to pick up the 3*CD hits and B-Sides which costs slightly less than buying both....

Advantages: Arty and S&M obsessed Disadvantages: Arty and S&M obsessed!
...Actually, it's "Dirk Wears White Sox".
A reference to Dirk Bogarde ( a hero of Adam's ), but not sure why or if he really does wear white socks??
Most people will only know this from the chant "Dirk Wears White Sox!!" on the song "Don't Be Square (Be There)" on Kings of the Wild Frontier.
The album is very Art-rock, sleazy, with S&M references, references to blow jobs (Cleopatra, was a "wide mouthed girl") and otherwise coming during the
punk era pretty offensive.
However, it is probably still my favourite Ants album.
Pre all the warrior ant, red indian, zulu beat stuff of Kings. The Ants used to appear in bondage & perform songs such as "You're So Physical" and "Beat My Guest" - both not on this album.
Originally, Dirk was released by the original Ants line up Adam (vocals), Matthew Ashman (gtr), Andrew Warren (bass) & Dave Barbe...
