I would recommend this album to anyone who likes Prince and who may be unsure about how good his real old stuff is. I have been listening to Prince since 1986 and I still play this album regularly, far more than some of his later albums. He sings falsetto throughout which is what I think I prefer. 'I Wanna Be Your Lover' is probably the best known on this so if you like that softly funky, non-commercial sound that Prince has you will like the whole album. 'Sexy Dancer' is my personal favourite for being so funky. It also has his less commercial version of 'I Feel For You' which was written by Prince but later covered by Chaka Khan whose version is brilliant, but they both have their own place depending on your mood. I feel like listening to it now!
Prince, formerly known as the ‘Sign’, and also the ‘Artist’, now back to Prince again, has a list of chart topping songs and has got to be credited for the music he’s shared amongst other artists.
Purple Rain is a movie featuring Prince as an actor, however, I’m not commenting on the movie.. it’s the album you’re all interested in.
During his years, Prince had a fascination with girls on keyboards that were trying too hard to seduce the camera crew and microphones, so he ventured further, eventually making the superb ‘Diamonds and Pearls’, and ‘The Most Beautiful Girl In The World’ songs. Excellent tracks.
However, this album, Purple Rain, the first song ‘Lets Go Crazy’, makes you feel like you want to. After that, you can sit back and chill ...
Advantages: Beatufiul reinterpreataions, heartleft vocals, great songs Disadvantages: perhaps a little too nashville slick on occasion
Will Oldham has had a number of personas over the years and has worked under the names Palace brothers, Palace Music, Will Olham and Bonnie Prince Billy (amongst others I'm sure). This release comes under Bonnie Prince Billy but is the least Bonnie prince Billy sounding album he has made... and for that matter the least Will Oldham sounding album. This is glorious, unadulterated country music. What it shows off is how good and versatile Oldham's song writing actually is. These songs are all reimaginations and rearrangements of songs previously recorded under his palace guise. As Palace they were lo-fi, discordant and mostly inaccessible. Here they are lush and beautiful thanks to the help of producer Mark Nevers (of Lambchop) and an array of Nashville's best session players. Many see this record as an Oldham prank or parody country album ...
Advantages: prince is back to his best form Disadvantages: none
This album is for everyone who enjoyed Prince when they were teenagers (early 80s).
The first song on the album made me stand up in my own living room and move those hips that have been static for way too long! I have kept moving around the room throughout the all 12 songs.
Afterwards, I listened to it again, this time paying attention to the lyrics. I was moved by the words of ?Cinnamon Girl? and laughed to the words of ?On the couch?.
Over the years there were many stories about Prince, about his change of name, change of religion, change of his record label, and I have to admit I did loose an interest in his songs, and for a long time didn?t want to buy any of his music.
For anyone who liked Prince?s old stuff (remember ?Purple Rain? or ?Kiss??) but couldn?t listened to some of his other songs, this album is for you ...
Solo performer: Prince (various instruments). Recorded at Alpha Studios, Burbank, California. Like his 1978 debut, FOR YOU, Prince composed, played, sang, produced and arranged all the songs on his 1979 follow-up, simply titled PRINCE. While PRINCE features a number of great dance songs, it also gave his future audience an idea of what they could expect from a talent many consider the finest pop composer of the 1980s. Barely into his 20's, Prince already possessed a remarkable musical vocabulary and subterranean understanding of an untold number of musical genres--ones he was rapidly combining in a way no one had heard before. On the rocker "Bambi," Prince shows off his dazzling, heavy metal-styled guitar work, while on "Still Waiting" and the now-pop standard "I Feel For You," he displays the kind of gentleness reminiscent of the best of Smokey Robinson or Stevie Wonder. Though PRINCE did yield the #1 R&B hit, "I Wanna Be Your Lover"--it also cracked the Top 40 on the pop charts--it wasn't until his next release that his highness truly captured the American consciousness. PRINCE stands as a remarkable release by an emerging talent of immeasurable innovation.
