Listen up, possums! The self-proclaimed reincarnation of Prokofiev's mother(!), Dame Edna ... more
Everage here makes a delightful debut on the children's circuit. Prokofiev's famous work transcends the traditional limits of its genre, and thanks to the wit and charm of her camp persona, the Dame does the same. Her tongue in cheek rendition, backed by her hometown Melbourne Symphony, is sure to make parents want to sit down with their children to enjoy the stories. Also on the album is a certain Barry Humphries giving a warm-hearted Babar the Elephant and, finally, Britten's Purcell-inspired Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra. Many parents will probably have strong preferences for their own favourite recording of Peter and the Wolf. But this one scores well above "Everage". Yngvil V.G

Advantages: Spitting Image, lots of laughs, great intro to classical music Disadvantages: Deflates a little in the middle, wanted more
guess was the reasoning behind this visual interpretation. It seems a little out of place amongst the general jovial nature of the rest of the DVD and perhaps might not be appreciated so much by younger viewers. There are some distractions with the ominous appearance of the Wolf (signifying Communist Russia I suspect...) and other animals but for me it doesn't really work, even though it is undoubtedly beautifully done visually and musically.
This piece ends with Grandfather/Prokofiev standing sadly in the snow, Peter runs off into the forest.
So the final music starts - Prokofiev's "Classical Symphony". Peter finds a castle which seems to signify some kind of musical heaven and to his delight he encounters the ghosts of the classical composers which Prokofiev was inspired and musically provoked by when writing this symphony - guys ...

Advantages: Useful for helping to teach yung children about musical instruments Disadvantages: The story is a little bit grown up for some of the younger audiences.
Sergei Prokofiev is a fantastic composer and this is one of his best works. Peter and the Wolf is a story about how a child disobeys his gandfathers advice, and has a rather scary encounter with a wolf. He is saved by some huntsmen and the story ends happily. Each of the characters has its own representative instrument from the orchestra. Peter, a young boy is represented by the strings, who have lots of tunes with excellent harmonies. Peter's grandfather, whom Peter ignores, is played by the bassoons, a personal favourite of mine as i myself play one. I think that the bassoon has been chosen to play the grand father because it has a sense of age, and, being a bass instrument, has a sense of authority and towards the end sternness for the disobedience of Peter. Throughout the tale there are animals. The cat is played by the clarinets ...
