My favourite punkers are back with an effort with similar musical composition to So Long And Thanks - an album I swore Fat Mike said would be their last. While Pump Up The Valuum still holds NOFX to the old skool punk attitude they helped to forge, my only concern is that at times it sounds a lot less happy (once again this was a gripe I had with the previous record).
I do say at times (and that also does not mean that the songs are not good). For the rest, Fatty and the boys are as loud, vulgar and punked up as ever!
Although the album takes a swing away from their famous ska beats (adopting polka instead in the hilarious 'Theme From A NOFX Album'), it does not fail to deliver in diversity. There are the sad (yet really catchy) songs like 'Dinosaurs Will Die', 'What's The Matter With Parents Today' and 'Take 2 Placebos...' which will have you nodding along in a state somewhere between frustration, sorrow and dumb happiness.
Then there are the downright hilarious 'White Trash' style upbeat dirty-punk tracks like 'Pharmacist's Daughter' and 'Clams Have Feelings Too'. These tracks stand out as favourites - NOFX whipped these out when I saw them during their recent tour - there are no better songs to cut sick in the pit to! Lesbian Louise makes an appearance for the Nth time on a NOFX record with 'Louise' and a foray into the newly aquired genetalia of a sex-change operation recipient in 'My Vagina' makes for some amazingly funny (but extremely crude) songs!
Basically, NOFX have done it again. They have crammed 14 quality tracks into a 30 minute disc which means you can listen 48 times in one day. I would, you should too. Now pull out your wallet, whip out your card and prepare to purchase a ticket through the completely warped minds of Mike, Melvin, Eric and El Hefe - it'll be a purchase you won't regret!
