One summers day in 1994 I strolled into my local independant record store and asked the fellow behind the counter (Alan I recall) if there was anything new out that might be worth a listen. Alan suggested to me that I might want to try punk in drublic by nofx, he thought it may be the kind of thing I would enjoy (i had postbox red spiky hair). Well, that day changed my commitment to music forever, never before had I heard an album that reached out and grabbed so hard. Every track on the album still sounds as fresh and exciting now as it did 11 years ago and it has rarely been out of my cd player since. You are probably now thinking, Oh come on Chris, it can't be that good, well it IS.
You probably have one album that in your mind defines a certain period of your life, that evokes memories of better times with no worries or stress. Punk in drublic is that album for me, from the blistering opener of linolium all the way through to the solo acoustic performance of scavanger type, I am picked up and transported back to '94. This album is pretty heavy listening for those used to a more mainstream type of punky pop (busted spring to mind), however I defy anyone who listens to guitar based music not to love this album.
17 Tracks may seem a little excessive but when you notice that this a little over half an hour long you realise that each one is going to be a short trip in to power punk heaven. Nofx have a trademark sound whick is all tied together by the combination of quick drumming and fast bass playing. When your rhythm section is this good you are onto a winner. Most tracks on the album follow the formula of having this trademark sound although there are some familiar diversions into Ska (reeko) and spanish music (my heart is yearning). The vocal style of the band is to sing slightly flat but enhance this with multipul vocal harmonies and it works a treat, tracks such as the cause and leave it alone showcase this brilliantly.
Nofx are signed to Epitaph records and continue to record and release material which is also excellent, however punk in drublic was their defining moment (for me) and I would recommened it to anyone.
