Technically director perfectly fits this genre, you have everything here: the moving tree branches, murky ponds, garden with too many strange plants, peeling paint and sudden thunderstorms, creaking and crackling, stylized flashbacks and glimpses of superstitious, believe in black magic, just to keep us totally unsettled. However, so silly as it is, it does tricks, to keep disbelieve a bit of it, but still to get us scared.
There's absolutely no subtext to this film--it's simply a bit of entertaining, it becomes both hilarious and terrifying at the same time. You can't help but love it. The result is pure and simple; it's satisfying for an average viewer. It is also, however, mystery telling by numbers and it does manages to strike that balance between mystery and thriller in such a way that ...
