When i first heard that Nicholas Barker (ex Cradle of Filth) was joining Dimmu borgir i knew something special was going to happen. Excellent thrash guitar riffs rip throughout this album accompanied by keyboard and synthesizer pieces which only add to the atmosphere.
The album starts with a misleading, almost tranquil instrument, 'Fear and Wonder', before launching at high speed into 'Blessings Upon the Throne of Tyranny', a masterpiece of Dimmu's compositional prestige and skill at playing their instruments. The next few tracks are all black metal artworks with speedy guitars and the incredible vocal talents of Shagrath. Track 6 'Puritania', an experimental track from Shagrath and Mustis, using distorted voices and synth effects, a complete shy away from the style of the album but fits in well as a rest bite from the black metal punishment.
The rest of the album steers back to the traditional, but faster black metal of the earlier tracks, with 'Sympozium' featuring Gothic sounding keyboard work mixed with heavy, harsh guitar riffs. The final track of the album let you dust off your spandex and leather and rock out to a Twisted Sister cover, 'Burn in Hell' which is talented handled if not a little tongue in cheek.

Overall one of my favourite black metal albums of all time, a masterpiece from the Norwegian titans. I cant fault this album at all, everytime i listen to it i just get sucked into the whole vastness of it.
