their third album, Pyromania, the band reconciled new wave melodicism with heavy metal and catchy hooks without compromising any of its edge. The album has sold over 10 million copies, due in part to heavy rotation on MTV. But even without their ubiquitous television presence, anthems like "Rock of Ages" and "Foolin'" still had the stuff that drove the kids crazy. Bursts of screaming guitars and simple power riffs joined forces with choruses that begged to be shouted along to. Guitarists Phil Collen and Steve Clarke may have provided all the pyrotechnics on Pyromania, but the focal point of Def Leppard's sound, particularly for their teenage female fans, was singer Joe Elliott's voice (and, of course, his hair). The record--an essential brick in the foundation of '80s metal--also contains the hit "Photograph". --Steve Gdula

Advantages: Good lyrics, heavy rock sound, strong throughout Disadvantages: None that I can think of.
...far the guys came between Pyromania and High'n'Dry in terms of song writing. It's fairly speedy stuff, with plenty of harmonic vocals and a guitar duel a la "Hotel California" (albeit not as accomplished). This is certainly my favourite song in the album.

==========
Pyromania exudes quality from start to finish and it's little wonder that some people still feel this is even better than Hysteria. I'm not entirely decided as to that point. Certainly lyrically it is better with Songs 5 and 10 being real belters in that department. In terms of mass appeal to today's newer Leppard fans brought up on ballads and sweet-sounding soft rock sounds, this is perhaps not what they ... more
The third album in the Def Leppard library is so different from the first two ... it's an absolute stonker of an album (yes, I said stonker - not stinker). It's pretty much the album that 'made' them and no wonder.
Song 1 - Rock Rock Till You Drop ================================ This is about as hard as Def Leppard have ever got in their long careers. Joe Elliot blasts his lungs out in a song not too dissimilar to some AC/DC stuff. This is a "fun" song and pretty good although some people used to the current 'softer' Lappard stuff may not want to listen to it more than once.
Song rating: 8/10
Song 2 - Photograph =================== This was their first hit single and it's a good 'easy listening' kind of song. You can immediately spot Mutt Lange's influence all over this song. The lyrics fit in nicely with the theme of the song (it's written about Marilyn Monroe) and this is where you first come across the harmonic vocals that have become Def Leppard's hallmark ever since. The song is nicely weighted throughout and isn't overly long or laborious in any part. It is one of the stars of the album.
Song rating: 9/10
Song 3 - Stagefright ==================== Another AC/DC-ish type of track along the lines of song 1. Lyrically not as strong as some others on the album, it's a heavy rocker that the Leps started their "In the Round" gigs with so dramatically. It has a nice fast solo that fits in nicely with the rest of the song (another Leppard hallmark). Again, it may not be a song that later Leppard fans may appreciate but one that the true rockers amongst their fan base will enjoy.
Song rating: 8/10
Song 4 - Too Late for Love ========================== A musically interesting track. Starts off as a ballad with some "wind" noise and a single guitar, before adding some harmonic vocals and then building up to the inclusion of the rest of the instruments. One of the slower tracks, it may be, but it's not quite a ballad and not quite a rocker ... until you get to the pre-solos, where a bit of additional rock sound is added with a bit of palm muting and a slightly faster rhythm. The second 'solo' changes the tempo of the thing again before moving back to its steady tempo again for the outro. This song has a lot to keep you coming back for more.
Song rating: 8/10
Song 5 - Diehard the Hunter =========================== Again, this starts off with some fake sound effects before starting off slowly. After a minute or so the true tempo of the song comes into play and it's wonderful stuff! The lyrics in this song show just how far the guys came between Pyromania and High'n'Dry in terms of song writing. It's fairly speedy stuff, with plenty of harmonic vocals and a guitar duel a la "Hotel California" (albeit not as accomplished). This is certainly my favourite song in the album.
Song rating: 10/10
Song 6 - Foolin' ================ One of the weaker songs in the album but still a pleasant song to listen to. Starts off slowly. This is the closest the album has to a ballad but while the verses are quiet affairs, the chorus is somewhat louder although not particularly quick. The solo is also fairly weak as are the lyrics. However, still a fairly decent song in its own right that doesn't let the album down.
Song rating: 7/10
Song 7 - Rock of Ages ===================== "Gunter Gliben Glauten Globen". Four little words that mean so much ... or would if they actually meant anything. But that's how this song starts. A fun little start for a fun rocky song. It has Def Leppard stamped all over it and is a renowned crowd pleaser and 'involver' at their gigs. It's just pure rock that allows them to play to the crowd.
Song rating: 8/10
Song 8 - Comin' Under Fire ========================== Probably the weakest song on the album. Another famous Leppard format ... slow and quiet verses and louder, slightly faster, chorus. This one still seems to be a throwback to High'n'Dry, their previous album. Still good enough for you to listen to the album without skipping tracks, though.
Song rating: 6/10
Song 9 - Action Not Words ========================= Another AC/DC rocker. Again, a relatively weak song considering the quality on offer elsewhere on this album. An out and out rock song with plenty of power chords and some clever sounding string bending. Still, it's not a bad tune.
Song rating: 7/10
Song 10 - Billy's Got a Gun =========================== Relatively slow song, but not one I'd call a ballad, and lyrically haunting. Thematically similar to Diehard the Hunter, this is another epic along similar lines to the earlier song. Again, the lyrics are excellent. It's a shame that Def Leppard abandoned these powerful songs for more in the way of 'fun' titles in later years if this is the quality of the stuff they could produce.
Song rating: 9/10

I bought Pyromania after buying Hysteria and having never listened to a track on it. I expected much of the same, but found it to be slightly heavier in it’s songs and there seemed to be more variety in the songs and their lyrics. The best songs are Too Late for Love and Rock of Ages. Listen to the beginning of Rock of Ages and you will see where the Offspring got some of their lyrics from in “Pretty Fly for a White Guy”. This was the last album ... ...arm in a road accident and maybe that’s why you can tell that it’s rockier than what they have done since. This album didn’t really hit the heights of the charts in the UK, but it managed to get to number 2 in the US, only beaten by Michael Jackson’s Thriller. If heavy metal of the 80’s is your scene then I would highly recommend adding this to your record collection. ...

Advantages: Still the best album I've ever heard, nearly 20 years on Disadvantages: My vinyl copy is wearing out.
Yes, in my opinion it is.
Perhaps I was just at that age, where I was looking for that "classic" album in my life (approx. 17 at the time).
I had caught approx. 10 seconds of the video for Rock of Ages, on a video show, and, was hooked.
On the Monday after that, I went out and bought the album (yes an LP). And, listened to it each day, for about 2-3 months. I just couldn't get enough. It was head and shoulders above the rest of the heavy metal ... ...Rock Rock ('til you drop), as still used commonly as an opener for their concerts. Rock of Ages, is still going strong as a concert favourite. Foolin' occasionally get's an airing also.
As for the other's, Die Hard The Hunter, Billy's Got A Gun, et al, are all superb. It's just a shame that this was the last album that Rick Allen made before he had his accident.
Who know's what Def Leppard could have been/still can be, if Rick Allen hadn't lost ...

Advantages: Not many Disadvantages: Weak writing and poor production
After the triumphs that were Pyromania, Hysteria and Adrenalize, what has gone wrong with DefLeppard? Slang is a weak album, which without their previous performances, wouldn't have even got a look at the charts. When a sample filled title track is the best cut from a guitar based rock band, then really it is a disappointment. Although many people said that The Lep's had become formulaic in their writing, at least it rocked, which unfortunately this album does not.
If you were thinking of getting this to add to your DL collection, listen to Hysteria and imagine all that it isn't. Then save your money. ...
Advantages: Raw and Emotional Disadvantages: Not noticed by the public
I am so tired of so called Lep fans downing this cd. This is truely a great album that was made with heart. The lyrics are raw and really reflects the bands true talent. If anyone knows DefLeppard there are 2 major points to the band.
1. They are not a heavy metal band!
2. They thrive upon being different and ever changing! Slang totally represents that hands down!
The cd also show each members own talent. With songs like work it out by Vivian!! Great song. Blood runs cold is also a warming tribute to the late Steve Clark.
This is a must have cd for any true fan! You cannot condem them for this just because it is different.
Remember, in the 80's Hysteria was way different form pyromania and that is what put them at the top!
If Defleppard didn't give us cd's like Slang and hysteria then they would not be they band they ...
Advantages: Easy to listen to Disadvantages: Very few decent tracks
For those weaned on the two albums that 'made' DefLeppard (in the US at least), Pyromania and the multi-million selling Hysteria, Adrenalize was eagerly awaited and then just as eagerly forgotten.
It is probably the last 'typical' DefLeppard album but there seemed to be a large chunk of creativity missing. How much of this came from guitarist and primary song writer, Steve Clark's, untimely death I don't know but it delayed the album and it looks as though it was finally rushed out the door ... after all, it had been four years since Hysteria.
Adrenalize is a 'girly' album. And that's coming from someone who enjoyed Hysteria so much (the album changed my taste in music) that he listened to at least one song from it every day for five years!
It has numerous weak tracks. One of the weakest is without a doubt "Make love like ...

Album Notes
Def Leppard: Joe Elliot (vocals); Steve "Steamin'" Clark, Phil Collen, Pete Willis (guitar); Rick Savage (bass); Rick Allen (drums).
Additional personnel: John Kongos, Booker T. Boffin, Charlie (keyboards); The Leppardettes (background vocals). Recorded at Park Gates Studios, Battle, Sussex, England and Battery Studios, London, England. Although many music fans were convinced that Def Leppard would become hard rock's next big band, few could have predicted the massive across-the-boards success that its third record, 1983's PYROMANIA, achieved. Many wondered why it was taking the group so long to release a follow-up to 1981's HIGH 'N' DRY, but the finished product was well worth the wait. Not only did it become one of the year's best-selling albums and made the band instant U.S. arena headliners, but it has remained a consistent seller ever since (by 1994, it had reached nine million units in the U.S. alone). The songwriting and overall sound was more streamlined and succinct this time around--while there are guitar riffs galore, the songs have more of a pop feel. Founding guitarist Pete Willis left during the recording, replaced by Phil Collen, who fit in perfectly with the band. The album features such mega-hits as "Photograph," "Rock of Ages," and "Foolin'," as well as a couple of other tracks that could have easily been singles as well, "Rock Rock (Till You Drop)" and "Too Late for Love." PYROMANIA remains one of the best and most popular hard-rock recordings of the '80s.
